Good day!
Wanted to share a recipe with you where you will either love me for or not.
They are a little time consuming. Hopefully, worth your time.
The name given is "pepper nut" but, nothing nutty about them. They contain no nuts. Just sized like a nut. Little bits of spice. Perfect for your yarn.
After the dough is mixed, roll small pieces into "snakes". The thinner the snake, the smaller and crisper the "nuts". If your dough is sticky, you may want to place your snakes in the freezer to harden a bit. This will make the next step easier.
Cutting. This is the part that may take time. I find that using kitchen scissors is a little quicker... although you may just want to use a knife.
Lots of little nuts ready to pop into the oven. Try to make sure there is enough space in between them on the cookie sheet. Bake at 350˚ for about 10 minutes... until they start to brown.
They really are the perfect size to grab a handful and pop into your mouth... one at a time.

-Is there a specific order to the mixing of the ingredients?
- What is the weight equivalent of "3 sticks of butter" please? Where I live, butter isn't sold in sticks so I would have to measure it myself.

ReplyDeleteMy great aunt from Rhode Island made these. When I was a very young child, visiting from Kansas, I thought these were the most extraordinary treat! The name always confused me, but I loved the spicy flavor and hard crunch. I had never tasted anything like them. So nice to see they are still appreciated!! Many thanks for conjuring up wonderful memories for me this morning.

ReplyDeleteThese look delicious! And I think the small bites are a great idea. As far as time goes, don't know if it would save much time, but I wonder if you could bake them in sticks them break them up if you wanted smaller pieces? I'll have to give them a try. :)

This is actually a family tradition passed down for many generations in my community - I'm of Mennonite background from Kansas. Mennonites in Minnesota and Nebraska make them, too. How did you hear of them? Thanks for sharing your recipe! :) It's fun to have it passed around!

ReplyDeleteO, nice. I'm from Holland, and this is an old Dutch recipe. We celebrate Sinterklaas (you call him SantaCLaus) on the 5th of december (you have moved the dear old man to Christmas, very handy). Sinterklaas gives presents and he has Pieten to help him. It is very traditional and according to the legend of Sint Nicolaas, he trew money for girl to stay out of trouble (with a bit of money they could get married). This money is represented by Peppernuts, and in Holland we call something very expensive 'peperduur', because of the 16th century price of pepper. And the Sinterklaas tradition started somewhere around that time. The Mennonites where founded by a Dutchman I believe, so that fits in the picture (Anglicism of a Dutch expression?!).
