make do

Several times in my knitting life, I have been without my precious cable needle and had to improvise. I have used a paper clip, a bobbie pin and yesterday, a golf tee. It was a first... but it worked. Anything fun you've used?

I'm making a cute little sweater out of this book using that fantastic yarn.

I wanted to mention that Scout's swag is having her customer appreciation sale. 15% off everything through the 30th! Namaste bags, Goknit pouches, (have never owned one of those, I think it is time to change that), magnets, tape measures , clover! sock blockers, oh my. Time to stock up on gifts.

  2. LOVE the tee idea! I've had to use a bobby pin to hold the stitches of the toe of a sock until I could get my needle to kitchener it. Us knitters know how to improvise!

  4. Now that's an interesting cable needle! I don't think I've ever been without mine and had to improvise ... yet.

  5. I love that you used a tee.
I've used a paper clip too. And a little dpn.
And the old "holding the stitches in my fingers" trick that never did the trick for me.
I might have used a pencil once too. Oh, and a crochet hook. I would recommend none of the above.

Can't wait to see the sweet baby knit!

  6. I learned to cable without the cable needle and have never looked back. I hated cables until I learned how to not use the extra needle.

  10. I cannot say enough about the GoKnit pouches - I own three! You definitely need one. And have you tried cabling without a needle? I think it's Grumperina who has a great tutorial - you'll never need a thing from that golf course again, hahahaha!

  13. how clever! I've had to resort to a stubby little pencil on a very long car ride when my cable needle decided to go undercover. I never did find it!

  15. Wooden kitchen skewer. Not a great success with that.
Do go purchase a GoKnit bag. They are fantastic, and my knitting life would be less without them.

  16. Such pretty pink yarn. Smart use of a golf tee!

  17. Pretty! I use crochet hooks to do my cables. It works so much better than a cable hook, imo. :)

  18. I, too, have used bobby pins. Lately I haven't been using any cable needle at all unless the cable is one of thos big, honking ones... Hope you are enjoying the Summer!

  20. HA. Good thinking. I've used a chopstick and also a toothpick.

  21. I've been knitting at the office (shhh don't tell) and used a pen. I also used paperclips for stitch markers.

It's nice to know there are others -- I've used a small DPN, a crochet hook, a ballpoint pen, and a toothpick! This despite the fact that I own at least a dozen cable needles! Jo

  24. Good idea for a small cable job, and I like the idea of the "stopper"end.

  25. Oh funny. I've had to use a toothpick and paper clip before, but love the golf tee best!

  26. ooh i've used a paperclip too! I enjoy the golf tee.. haha very McGuyver of you! ;-) PS. knitting without a cable needle is amazing... i was objective at first but gave it a go.

  28. Chopsticks! I would use them to knit, but they aren't the throw away kind so they have texture. I have also used a coffee straw. A stitch holder or a spare tip for my interchangable needles are probably what happens most often aside from the actual cable needle.

  29. I've done that before! Cute with the golf tea.

yeah, it happens often to me to use something strange as a cable needle! everything: pencils, pins, hairclips :-))
I love your idea and the color of this yarn is gorgeous!

  31. I recently resorted to a hair chopstick. It wasn't sharp enough to knit with very well, and my hair was down while I did it, but it served the purpose. I have frequently used knitting needles to hold my hair up when without a hair utensil, but only once gone the other way around! A tee seems like a pretty hand sub.

  32. I love that book!! I don't usually grab a book off the shelf the minute I see it and buy it, but I did this one! Once home I went through and put one of those skinny post-it tags on pages with items I want to make. I think more have tags than don't. I got side tracked by making Susan B Anderson's "Hello Baby Cardigan and Hat" for a sample in a lys, but must get it out again and try making at least a couple of the items. Am anxious to see what one you chose and the finished item.

i use golf tees all the time! my partner plays and before i started knitting, i complained about the number of golf tees and other golfing items that were scattered around the house - now im thankful for them! :-p

  34. so funny, brilliant idea on your part! i love gadgets so it seems like i'm never without. i actually really enjoy using cable needles, so haven't learned to go without!

  35. A golf tee..that is clever. We minature golf in this house and I've never seen a minature golf tee so I can't use that idea. Tried using a tooth pick once - you can imagine how that worked. In the end, I learned to do it without the cable needle and sometimes I do that even when I have the cable needle handy!

  36. Roadtrips were famous for me dropping the cable needle down the seat edge- so usually a bobby pin or safety pin would have to do. Then I discovered this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6DB6WhAKvY and have never gone back- love it!

  37. HA! Perfect! I love it!

  38. I once cast on and knit a large portion of the eleventh hour scarf using those jumbo pencils. The golf tee is ingenious.

  39. Hi Leslie, Now that golf tee is desparate isn't it! But I get where you're coming from, let no-one keep us from doing our knitting. Cheers. Kind regards, Anita.

  40. Great idea, but over the years I've learned to cable w/o the use of a cable needle and now find using a third needle awkward. Watch this You Tube video if interested. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6DB6WhAKvY
