hi
Tuesday, January 11, 2011I've been a little off my game over here. This morning, I ripped out the second sleeve of my Elizabeth sweater. I reversed the decreases, so the sleeve was pretty tight near the underarm. That just wouldn't do. And last week, I made hockey pucks. No, seriously. Hockey pucks.
I didn't really catch it with the first batch. I thought that I had just forgot to roll them in sugar. So, next batch, I rolled. Then I realized that wasn't the only problem. They were heavy. As in, really heavy. Checked out the recipe. Whoops... I used baking powder. Not baking soda. And it was a really big whoops. Cause I had doubled the recipe.
When you don't succeed, try, try again. And so I did. And they turned out exactly as they should. (It wasn't my first go around with these. We love them around here.)
Over the last few times I have made them, I decided I like them a little smaller. They pack up nicely to give to friends.
I did finish a little knit. Made for a special friend. I had this yarn in my stash for some time. I turned to one of my favorite books, Pipsqueaks. Over the years, I have made my children several sweaters out of this book. It really is a great one to add to your collection. You may even be able to find it in one of your used book stores. Speaking of used books... I recently stumbled upon the Moosewood Cookbook. Where have I been? And how did I ever live without it?

i just want a delay tomorrow...everyone just needs to sleep in. And those cookies are delicious. Thanks for the recipe.
ReplyDeleteWhen we thought my son would be attending law school at Cornell, we ate at Moosewood. It was as wonderful as the cookbook. We adored it. Their chocolate cake(recipe in book) was to die for. I am finishing up my Astor and adoring it. Can't wait to wear it. Thanks for the inspiration. This is a good one.
ReplyDeleteSuper cute and classy little cardigan! My favorite Moosewood cookbook is "Moosewood Cooks at Home" -- it's very useful and practical for everyday cooking, but still has lots of creative and healthy recipes. I love the avocado corn salad!
ReplyDeletei made that exact same sweater from pipsqueaks for jane when she was 2 and kate was a baby. brings back memories!!!
ReplyDeleteUsed book stores are the best. The one by my house is run by a non-profit literacy organization. And I recently bought a copy of Joy of Cooking there; I had no idea that my mom's mac and cheese recipe WASN'T from Joy of Cooking. The things we learn...
ReplyDeleteLove the Moosewood cookbooks. Our favorite is Broccoli Forest. My son could eat the Potato LEek Soup everyday! Very cute wee sweater. This is my year to make myself a sweater!
ReplyDeleteLove my Moosewood cookbook! If you are ever in Ithaca definitely go to their restaurant =-)
ReplyDeleteOooh...I live near the Moosewood Restaurant!
ReplyDeleteOh yummy! The cardi is sweet too.
ReplyDeleteOne of my jobs pre family I worked at a company that had catered lunches and the cook always used the Moosewood Cookbook. I'm going to have to dig my copy out and start using it. I love the sweater and cookie idea.
ReplyDeleteI thought you might have run away to TNNA with your mom and sisters. :-)
ReplyDeleteCookies and cardigans. As always, you're busy with the right kind of things.
Your cookies look delicious. One of our favorites around here are her chewy molasses cookies. Recipe here :

ReplyDeleteI have done the baking powder vs baking soda swap before, not a good result LOL
ReplyDeleteLove Moosewood cook book. Have not used it for awhile, will find it tonight. The wee sweater is very cute and the cookies yum
ReplyDeleteMmmm
ReplyDeleteYour baking is so peaceful to me. Even when you make the baking powder/backing soda mistake - we've all done that! Right?
ReplyDeleteCute sweater! Love it that you used stash too!
I must make these cookies - they look wonderful - and taste even better the second time around, right? I have so done that:) And Moosewood - oh my. I have made the home made spaghetti sauce countless times - it is such a treat!
ReplyDeleteAre you hoping for a school delay tomorrow, Les? Cute sweater!
ReplyDeleteThose cookies look soooo yummy! I'm sure everyone loved them!
ReplyDeletethe sweater looks adorable
ReplyDeleteI found my Moosewood cookbook last night after seeing yours on flickr and made the potato leek soup for dinner - we used to eat it all the time. You always inspire me!
ReplyDeletethose cookies look yum! haven't mixed the baking soda and powder up since abigail started helping me - she just grabs whatever is closer so i always double check!
have to make these cookies!! thanks for sharing them again. it's snowing here as well, and I'm hoping for just a delay for a little extra sleep. hoping you'll feel back on your game soon.
ReplyDeleteIs it the Moosewood Restaurant Low-Fat Favorites cookbook? If so, you should try the sweet potato black bean burritos. Pg 172. Heaven.
ReplyDeleteI have Pipsqueaks, too, and LOVE it! I've made a bunch of the sweaters in there - so cute! They've already called a snow day here - and it hasn't even started snowing! I'll be making cookies...
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet little sweater. I love the Moosewood cookbooks. Sooo many yummy recipes to try.
ReplyDeleteThat sweater is adorable. I never get tired of knitting tiny sweaters.
ReplyDeleteThat sweater is perfect! I love it!
ReplyDeleteOh Leslie, I am very impressed by your cookie resilience. I am sure I might have given up completely!
ReplyDeleteI was just reminded about Moosewood over on Upper Pond. I was given the Moosewood Cookery book many, many years ago by an American student friend and I have not looked at for years. I am going to dust it off and rediscover it now. I seem to remember a rather fabulous carrot cake recipe.
I throw in a hint of ground black pepper in my ginger cookie recipe. Sugar and spice and all things nice, with a kick! Yum!
ReplyDeleteOh! Hate it when I make hockey pucks. I always eat a couple of them, too, as I try to convince myself that they're really just fine and I can serve them to others without any guilt. Glad your second batch turned out well.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the sleeve, too. Hopefully the second incarnation of that will turn out as well as the second cookie batch did.
I read your blog this morning. Wanted to make oatmeal raisin cookies to send with my husband and son (they will be gone a few days checking out colleges). I made the EXACT same mistake - what is wrong with me - we are supposed to learn from OTHER'S mistakes, right? Threw out the batter - not enough ing. to make a new batch. Peanut butter chocolate chip now.
ReplyDeleteI was supposed to be good as the new year rolled in...but those cookies sound and look delicious. I must try them. But I'll make them small like you did so that I can gift some.....otherwise I'll eat them all. I need to check out that cookbook. Jodi talks about it all the time. Have a great end to your week.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, Pipsqueeks does have some lovely patterns, your little cardi is sweet!
ReplyDeleteI thought maybe the cookies you made were the butterscotch cookies from simply recipes (I had to click the link to see) they disappear quickly here when I make them
ReplyDeletesuch a sweet little sweater!
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain. I just knit an entire shawl (MadTosh's Mara) and then ripped the whole thing out because I just didn't like the way it turned out.
ReplyDeleteYour wee sweater is gorgeous!
The Moosewood cookbooks are great!
What a sweet little cardi! I'll definitely check out that book.
ReplyDeleteAnd Moosewood is awesome! I only have one of their cookbooks in my collection - Sundays at Moosewood. It's a great one!
I have lived with the Moosewood cookbook for almost twenty years now. It's almost unheard of in the UK but a family favourite..
ReplyDeletei almost forgot about your elizabeth sweater! bummer on the sleeve re-do. and double bummer on the double batch of dough gone wrong. i always mean to try that recipe and never ever have any molasses in the house. they just look so darn good!!!
ReplyDeleteand moosewood - so glad you discovered it. so great.
Can I ask a really stupid question, I have cup measures and understand how to use them for liquids and powders - but how does it work for butter????
ReplyDeletePuzzled English person
Hockey pucks. Hah! My grandmother used to make cinnamon buns that were hard as rocks. We all hated them, but no one had the heart to tell her. My uncle used to call them hocky pucks...
ReplyDeleteAdorable sweater. Someone else told me about this book too. I may need to grab a copy.
The cookies look great and I am sure were delicious. The Pipsqueak sweater is adorable. The chalkboard placemats arrived while I was in Santa Monica checking out Habu Textiles. Thank you! :-)
ReplyDeleteThe cookies look delicious. I haven't baked since the holidays. Oh and the sweater is perfect! I'm sure your friend will love it.
ReplyDeleteI think I am as addicted to the Moosewood book as I am to your gorgeous blog! Another goodie is the Enchanted Broccoli Forrest, also a Moosewood gem. Thanks for your little words of sunshine!
ReplyDeleteThis is for Puzzled English Person: 1 cup = 200 grams of butter. 4 Tablespoons = 1/4 cup = 50 grams of butter. I hope that helps!
ReplyDeleteLOL! I have a tendency to forget to add the second cup of flour when I'm making cookies. Makes for very wide, thin cookies!
ReplyDeleteOh geez, the Moosewood Cookbook is the awesomest! I assume you mean the one by Molly Katzen and not the Moosewood Restaurant cookbook.
ReplyDeleteThose "hockey pucks" were damn good. I ate the hell out of them!
ReplyDeleteHusband
The little sweater is so pretty! The cookies look so yummy all wrapped up like this! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteI figure, when you're a "maker", every once in awhile things won't turn out well. It's just SUCH a bummer when it happens more than once in a short period of time! But then things start working out again...like your yummy cookies and adorable little sweater!
ReplyDeleteThe cookies looks so tasty. Good on you for not giving up. Cute knit.
ReplyDeleteI discovered the Moosewood Cookbook in 2007 when I was starting my teaching career. It was, and still is, my rock and anchor. I have to purchase a copy, though, as I continually took out the copy I used from the local public library. Got to love the library!
ReplyDeleteThe little sweater is adorable. I'm going to check out the book. =)
