water bottle covers

It wasn't something that I had a burning desire to knit. I mean, I knew I would one day make one, I just didn't know when. Well, why in the world did I wait so long? You don't even have to have an ache or pain to fall in love with these things. It's like a little security blanket, tucked under your arm to keep you warm.
There are a bunch of patterns out there, but I really like this one. Like a little sweater for your water bottle. The pocket can be omitted. It looked cute without it, too. I used the two balls I had left over from this project and size 7 needles. Still looking plum to me. (Also, I don't know if it was just me, but I had too few stitches with the 77 to do the final decrease. I changed the K35 to K34 and the K34 to K33. ) I'm thinking there are several people that would love one of these under their tree. Oh! I ordered my first water bottle from target, but they seem to be out of stock. Our local drug store carries them.

My small size 7 circulars were not short enough to join the 44 stitches. I looked high and low for my double points. Tore the house apart, actually. In an effort to avoid purchasing more needles, I decided it was time to try the magic loop method again. Wasn't a fan the first time I tried it, but this time? This time I was sold. Using Cascade 220 Superwash.
Oh, and the double points? Saw them sitting plain as day on the book shelves, holding a pair of toast. Oy.

  4. Very cute cover. I've been looking for a great pattern, this looks perfect. I just learned the magic loop method in order to make your toast warmers, love it, so much easier than dpn's for me.

  6. What else do you need on a cold night? A hot water bottle (with knitted cover) and a pair of toasts. DPNs or Magic Loop - it's all good! I knitted a cozy with a cable down the middle - love it to death!

  7. Hahaha! When I teach people magic loop, I always say, you may not like the method, but it's a good one to have in your arsenal for when you can't find your other needles!

  9. Another 2 projects to love. I also like the idea of cascade 220 for socks. Thin but warm and washable. When you learn to make the magic loop socks is it a universal pattern? Or are you using a pattern and knitting it the magic loop way?

I haven't tried the magic loop yet, but I just took a class using 2 circulars and Judy's magic cast-on, and then Jeny's surprisingly stretchy bind off!
    All 3 were pure magic!

    Love those socks!

    Happy gift making~Jan

yikes magic loop still to scary for me..Maybe in the new year that will my new thing to try. I have always wanted to make a bottle cover hmmm do I have time before the holidays? My oldest loves to fall asleep with the herbal heat packs I make after a hard day of sports practice but the h20 bottle might be nice for her too.

  14. If you like the magic loop, try the traveling loop! Much less fiddly because the loop just moves with the work instead of having to pull and readjust halfway through each time. I love it!

  15. I've tried the magic loop method once. I'll have to give it a shot again. For now, I don't mind dpns.

  18. I wasn't a fan of magic loop when I first tried it either, but now I'm completely sold! It's fantastic and is faster than I had realized. I absolutely love your water bottle covers and also love how you described them as a little security blanket! Great gift idea, too.

  19. I appreciate you sharing your modifications to the pattern. My daughter has been wanting a new cover for her hot water bottle ever since she loaned her bottle to a friend a few years ago, and got the bottle back sansit's cover.

For the longest time, there didn't seem to be that many patterns for hot water bottle covers out there, and then all of a sudden they began popping up everywhere!

I wish I had 7's with a cord long enough to try the magic loop method, but guess I'll be forced to use my (homemade) size 7 dpn's.

  20. Such a cute water bottle cover. I've never used a hot water bottle, but now I really think I should buy one just so I can knit it a cute sweater! :) Saw your feature in Artful Blogger. Very cool! I think you were a great candidate for being featured. Your blog truly is an inspiration.

  21. When I lived back home in England (when I was little) we had no heating in our bedrooms! The hot water bottle was my best friend, but I never had a knitted cover for it. I bought Kristen a bottle a few years ago online and still haven't knit her a cover for it either! It's on my list.... I just never seem to get around to it, I love the simple one you chose.

  22. Hey, YOU!

You are too cute. You couldn't know I was "back" because I've been pretty much lurking here on your space. LOL!

I would so use a nice hot water bottle these cold days of winter. We've one of those family owned, local pharmacies close by. I think a walk is in order to see if they, too, carry one.

And the little sweater you knit for it is perfect! It is just another one of those fabulous hand made treasures your beautiful, creative self shares.

Enjoy these days that remain in the excitement of Christmas!

    xo...Ana

Love the idea...never could sell my hubby on painting a wall in my kitchen w/blackboard paint back when my kids were small... Once your magic loop, you never go back! :)..Once I learned.. I now do everything 2-at-a-time!.. so no 2nd sock, mitten, sleeve syndrome :)... Have a great Holiday Leslie!

  28. I feel like I'm getting a good thump on the head to give the magic loop a try. I've known about it forever but well...I'd have to rummage as much through my needles to find two circulars the same size as to find a set of dpns. Can't wait to see the line up of water bottle pictures.

  31. Hi Leslie, I was wondering if you have an idea about how much yarn it takes to make the cover. Trying to decide if I need to go buy yarn or use up yarn I have here. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.
PS I love the things you make I just haven't ever commented before that I can remember.

  32. I've made this one too. I have two more I was hoping to make before Christmas but haven't gotten to them yet. Love the plum color. :)

  35. Do you know Target doesn't actually handle water bottles anymore? I went into a Target requesting one and the Pharmacy was able to sell me one that was hidden behind the counter...because they order it separately from Target.

Guess they like you buying those instant disposable heat pads now.

  49. so, i just found your blog and I am totally smitten. I am totally a beginning (wouldn't even say knitter) but am up for challenges and big projects. Hoping one day I can make something like that Astor sweater I found on here. That said, I have a water bottle with an ugly, ugly cover and this might be the perfect remedy for that... might have to give it a try, if I can get the courage! :)
