get a life

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

I have been blogging for about 3.5 years. In that time, I have received one comment that could possibly be considered ill spirited. You remember? And that one really made me giggle. Cause it simply stated the truth. My blog is full of headless photos and cookie shots.

However, I received an anonymous comment on yesterdays post. Simply stating... "get a life". Wow. Seriously? Get a life?! I feel like my blog, along with all the other knitting, crocheting, sewing, cooking, baking, crafty blogs, OOOZE of life. And in between all the mundane (yet life rewarding) tasks of the day, picking out the perfect button, or the perfect yarn, or a fantastic project, or the loveliest fabric, or a delicious recipe for my peeps, or meeting friends, or watching a beautiful sunset or capturing a moment, or choosing things that make my heart sing, well, those times fill in all the other moments of A LIFE! S0, to "ms. get a life", I can only hope that you will figure it out one day. You don't have to like what I do, but understanding how others interests and passions are what drive them is a life lesson I hope you learn. With so many enjoyable opportunities in this wonderful world, I hope you find something that makes you "get" life.
xx, Leslie

  3. I love that you addressed it without getting petty, angry, and mean. So many other comments get just as mean when someone leaves something they don't like. You handled it with as much grace as you do your normal posts and you're a great example! We love your posts and that person can move along to other blogs they find more interesting.

You can't please everyone, wish that it were true, but alas there are sour souls out there so don't fret - I know it will bug you but your blog is brimming with life, Girlie, so keep doing what you do!

It is amazing what people will take time to comment! The other day, someone decided to comment on a tutorial on my blog, "this doesn't really make sense; I thought I was a good sewer but I don't understand this at all" or something along those lines! All I could do was laugh! I know I'm not the best at explaining things, but I'm not selling a pattern! I agree with Mark Your Spot....envy!

  8. Don't bother with that kind of silly comments. Like you see, we are so many knitters reading your posts. And it's probably because of your great comments on your interesting life!

  9. I don't know.... I think both the anonymous comments are funny.

I'm not sure if I've ever commented on your blog before, but I've been subscribed to it for some time now because of your beautiful photographs and the beautiful things you make. plus the name of your blog, a friend to knit with, just sounds so cozy and friendly. I knit while I'm at the computer, and it's always nice to see that I have something to read and look at from "a friend to knit with". anyway, I just had to reply to this. "get a life"? no, you have one, a beautiful and inspiring life that you have made/are making yourself. thank you for sharing some of it on this blog.

  12. i like your blog. it oozes life! thanks for sharing. my mama always taught me "if you cant say anything nice then dont say anything at all!". i guess the anonymous poster hasnt learned that.

  13. You lead a beautiful life which you document with your amazing photography. I can never get my camera to work, and I have "knitting ADD", so I never finish a sweater project. I can't really bake well either, so I have to live vicariously through your blog. And you seem like a very sweet and positive person. You, my dear, have an awesome life.

  23. Obviously, they didn't get it. I feel sorry for them actually. Sometimes life is about buttons, sometimes life is about health care plans, sometimes it is about gardening, sometimes it is about death, sometimes it is about birth, sometimes politics and sometimes nothing. Taking each moment and savoring it for what it is sounds like having a life to me. I'm sorry that commenter doesn't understand that.

Sounds like Get a life was on the wrong blog...should have been at facebook...so they can tell when they are going to the grocery store or writing a check for the house payment. Honestly, facebook is like reading someones diary. At least you show us what you are doing and teach us, inspire us. They need to move on!!!
As for me I always love to check out what you are doing next. Keep up the good work.

  33. It's funny, the internet, how when you talk about your life via the web it ceases to be real. If anything, you can get more of a glimpse into someone's life through their blog nowadays than anywhere else (unless you actually know the blogger personally). I think the person needs a cookie!

  39. I love your blog! It's too bad one negative comment can have more impact than a hundred positive ones. Ms. get a life doesn't have to read your blog if she has so much to do, but I for one look forward to your new posts. I've made several of your cookie recipes and they were all big hits with my family. And as a novice knitter I have great admiration for your knitting. Keep blogging!

  41. Hi Leslie,

I'm sure you read/hear this all the time, but it never hurts to to read it once more. Your blog is beautiful, and I'm so grateful that you choose to share parts of your life with us. It brings me joy to look at your pictures, projects, family, and friends, because you appear to approach all these things in your life with such care, love, generosity, and kindness. You and your blog are inspirations to me.

What a buttonless life that person must lead. Life is all about finding the joy in the small things that make us the most happy. A friend's laugh, the smile of a stranger, the first spring tulip, and a warm cookie, to name a few. And your blog shares your happy things with other people who enjoy seeing your happy things. So keep on keeping on.

Dear Ms, feel free to go elsewhere.

  49. Leslie, your blog shares a slice of your life and it is something we all enjoy be it from cookies to knitting to celebrating your children to picking out buttons. It is a FULL life. But not you, no way!

  57. Oh dear. You just have to feel sorry for this person - they obviously don't understand what life is all about. 71. Maybe it had something to do with the search for the perfect button...a search I have had on many occasions! I love all the little "unimportant" tasks that can make up a day, and a life. The perfect button or just the right mix of fabric, or really sweet little tomatoes at dinner all those things give me pleasure.

    Dear Leslie,
I first want to tell you that I have been quietly following your amazing blog for all of your 3.5 years, and until today, I have never posted a comment. That you received a "Get a life" comment, and subsequently described so eloquently the vivid, in-the-moment life you lead, which I must say, leaves most of us readers with our mouthes hanging open in awe of your very BEAUTIFUL life, finds me once again with my jaw open wide. Whoever it was that wrote that simply just doesn't GET it. This IS life, and yours is captured so beautifully by your photos and words. My sister, also named Lesli (no "e"), follow your blog in awe of all the creativity you possess. The speed in which you knit (holy cow!) such beautiful garments, your incredible artistic eye for photography, your love of your husband, children, parents, and sisters shines through to all who read "A Friend to Knit With". So please, keep writing about your beautiful life....because it is just that.

so sad and hurtful when an anonymous person posts a hateful and odd comment on someone's blog. I hope you are not discouraged by one person's strange comment.

    ReplyDelete
  113. argh. you have a beautiful life, at least from what i see- even without heads.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Well said, Leslie!!!! Those of us who find pleasure in the domestic arts most definitely have a life--a huge, rich, full life with the same ups and downs as everyone else. I couldn't imagine my life without the knitting, sewing, and baking. Those are some of the things that make it so much fun! And, by the way, we are molding kind, compassionate, independent human beings amonst all the domesticities, right? You better believe it!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Woops...I misspelled amongst. But you get the point!

    ReplyDelete
  116. I believe in the adage that if you cannot say something nice, say nothing at all. Of course, sometimes it isn't about saying something nice, but not knowing how to express a sentiment properly (usually condolenses, which I'm really bad with) that stops me from commenting. Either way, I would never try to hide my comments under an anonymous guise.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Fret not my Friend.
All about the life you "get" truly inspires mine.
Throughout our days, we never know who we might inspire.
You don't know me, and my family does not know you. But, believe me, their lives are greatly enhanced by your life. I get tremendous ideas from reading your blog. From decorating to crafts to cookies. I love your "headless" shots. So much, in fact, I sent one of my own, modeling your hat pattern, to my sisters to view.
Do not take offense to small minds who interject where not needed.
Just keep us reading. I'm sure I am not the only one who passes along bits of your life to others lives. And we're all the better.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I have been reading for several months and probably have only commented once or twice so this seems like a good opportunity to come out of the woodwork and say "I love your blog!!!" You have a great creative life, and thanks for sharing it with us! xo

    ReplyDelete
  119. amen sister! and i bet it was a mystery person behind the comment, right? someone with no name, no identity. Someone who is so jealous they can not even see straight, i bet.
Well, I am so glad you share your life with all of us. You are so inspiring, the one blog that really got me to pick up those knitting needles and get going.
Love you, and yoiur beautiful blog!

    ReplyDelete
  120. Well, I feel sorry for that person for being too closed minded to see that not everyone shares the same interests and the same joys. You *obviously* have a full and rich and rewarding life and it gives me great inspiration! It makes me sad when people feel the need to attack those who are different from them. Your response was *very* well put.

I'm also baffled sometimes by the etiquette (or lack thereof) people choose to exhibit online. Once, a few years ago, I posted to an online forum looking for advice on where to find a Bible Study in San Francisco. One person responded with the name of a church. Dozens of others responded with rude/sarcastic/belittling comments. I had said nothing even remotely contentious or offensive, just one simple question. Yet people felt the need to go out of their way to be rude, when in real life they probably would have held those snarky remarks to themselves. (To be fair, it was somewhat naive of me to expect otherwise in San Francisco). And the person who commented on your last post...she could have easily kept her negative thoughts to herself. In fact, it took much more effort to express them. And if you were face to face, I'd bet she wouldn't have said anything. So why is it "ok" to be rude through your keyboard but not your voice? Sad.

  121. Anonymous3/25/2010

Hmmm, I noticed that comment yesterday and was struck by it as well. Human nature makes us struggle with paying too much attention to one negative comment at the expense of 100's of kind words. I enjoy your blog. I remind myself daily that everyone is fighting a battle and it is not always evident what that battle is; at any rate, wouldn't you much rather be you than her? Thanks for sharing your days with us.

    Ann

  122. Sad to see so many judgmental and hurtful comments from the over 100 comments posted. Why is that?

As someone else mentioned, nobody knows what that person is dealing with in her life (of course, that person then went on to slam her, but her point was made, in a passive-aggressive way).

I wonder if the commenter meant that your post was a bit mundane and dry. And yes!, that is the wonderful part of our everyday life- parts are mundane. I personally enjoy a glimpse into people's lives- that's why I read blogs. But if you are dealing with LIFE and LIFE is big- job loss, health issues, children issues, marriage issues, etc., etc., reading someone's post about buttons can actually BE that final straw.

I personally prefer to view someone's motives with empathy and understanding rather than with disdain and dismissal. And I don't like the gang mentality of all the girls rallying around the Queen Bee and dissing the girl who dared to express a different view.

We wouldn't want our daughters to act this way, would we?

    ReplyDelete
  123. Well, I must need to get a life too because I find your blog so much fun to read and I, too, would search for the perfect button in my collection at home before going out and buying one. So please keep up the knitting, the baking and all the rest of your life and letting us all know about it.

    P.S.
Great way to handle the sarcasm, too, without getting nasty.

    ReplyDelete
  124. This is so sad from Ms "get a life". And it's even worse when we realize that this "Ms g.a.l" trolls are mainly everywhere. Today I've just read a post from a wonderful woman, who has a great blog. And she was kind of reacting exactly against someone who sent some message on a "get a life" style.
Weird enough: the wonderful woman said she got a pretty scary number of "g.a.l" people sending bitter comments on her post about her anniversary - she and her husband completed 10 years together.

By far, her post was on of the sweetest and most loving and kind love declaration I had ever read.
Me and some other friends of her were really happy and delighted with such tenderness of her words.

It's really sad that people cannot see happiness from other people and they fell they MUST to do something in order of spoiling the joy around.

Darling, your "virtual livingroom, garden" is a pure lightness, tenderness and joy! Remember that most of us here love you and your words!
    Always!

    Hug and kiss!!!

  125. Well, that wasn't very nice. Anonymous must be having a bad day.

You have a wonderful life, Leslie, and I'm so thankful that you want to share it with the world. The individual who left such a comment on your blog may not realize how well they are demonstrating that their own life must not be going so well. Your blog is darling and one of my very favorites! Keep it up! Now let's see that finished Heron!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  127. Oh my goodness Leslie! I love your blog and think it's so sad that someone would waste the time in their own life to write such a comment! Keep up the lovely posts that speak of life and love for all things wonderful!!

  128. Just want you to know that this is the one blog I look at after I check my hotmail and before I start working.

    ReplyDelete
  129. I love your blog and I think that you know how to live a brilliant life. I take inspiration from you and try not to take things for granted. Also reading blogs like yours helps others to appreciate the beauty in the small things.

    ReplyDelete
  130. picking about the perfect button was one of my favorite posts of yours. i think all of us crafty folk get that one.
why do people bother leaving comments like that

    ReplyDelete
  131. I write a blog and while it's not very well written and the pictures aren't photographed by a professional, I love it. My mother reads it for goodness sakes. My husband at first didn't get why I started a blog but now sees how much joy it brings me and now he too has grown to love it. I'm sorry you were the recipient of an unkind comment. I for one enjoy the fact that your every day adventures in cooking, knitting, button collecting, etc. brings a little bit of joy into my world too. Keep it up.

    ReplyDelete
  132. When I read that comment, I thought...how mean (& still think that.) You share your life so openly (well, except for heads!)& what a fun life you have. Glad you're not letting that 1 commenter ruin your day.

    ReplyDelete
  133. I don't even knit and I love your blog. You remind me that in the midst of it all, I need to do something I love that is refreshing. Plus, you knit some awesome sweaters! Thanks for sharing your busy, beautiful and tasty life!

    ReplyDelete
  134. I have been reading and enjoying your blog for some time now. I think a lot of us will be spurred to leave a comment this time. Life is full of little and grand moments. But living in the moment is what allows us to fully appreciate all moments. Even the small task of choosing a button can have it's beauty. Continue to feel it and share it with us. I will be here to read it!

  141. Well said, my dear! I don't anyone who "gets" life like you do.

    ReplyDelete
  142. What a strange person! Maybe they were having a bad day or maybe they are just naturally a mean person. I don't understand why people feel the need to leave rude comments. Its not like we are making them read our blogs. If they don't like them they should just stop reading. I personally love your blog and I think you have plenty of life! Keep up the fantastic blogging!

    ReplyDelete
  143. wow, some people just don't get it!

I rarely comment but I woke up this morning still upset that someone would take the time to attempt to ruin your day. Please don't let that commenter effect your blog. It takes a lot of time and effort to produce a wonderful blog like yours and I visit yours for a smile and a "I should make cookies for my kids" or Ha! Leslie is also having button issues!" Life is truly about the little everyday things and you show us examples of how and when to stop and live those moments. That negative commenter is probably very unhappy and one has to feel sorry for him/her.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Your life seems lovely, and you take great pictures! That person can't possibly be a knitter... :)

    ReplyDelete
  147. I love what you said about how it's the little things that we enjoy that really make our lives more full. I completely agree with you.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Ms "get a life" must not have one and is jealous...in my opinion. Also, if one does not have something good to say, perhaps he/she should say nothing at all. Please know that I look to you for inspiration. I think you do so many wonderful things that capture the essence of life. Thank you! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  149. Oh Leslie, you have a wonderful life, full of warmth, colour, humour, love, texture and joy and for those of us who love your blog (and there's lots of us who do) I thank you for sharing it with us. When someone feels motivated to leave a comment like that, rather than just moving on if it's not their cup of tea, then it's rather sad for them and smacks of envy. So keep it coming, you are my greatest source of cookie inspiration (I've tried loads of the recipes you've made and my family love them) and I love seeing your knits, for me you really are a friend to knit with (even from the other side of the world).
    Best wishes

    Love you friend!
Just think 3 years ago I didn't know you but here you are in my life, we live in the same town, have the same aged children & meet for great conversation & wonderful knitting time! Your blog may seem stupid to some but because of it I have a great friend like you!

    ReplyDelete
  153. Awesome post. I think that for the most part, negative comments are probably a direct result of someone going through a really tough time. It is hard to see someone so negative.

    ReplyDelete
  154. your blog is one of the most loveliest ones i've ever read. xo

    ReplyDelete
  155. Wow- it never ceases to amaze me how people respond at times. And how one comment, like this one you are blogging about, can carry such a negative energy with it and pack such power.
I love your response and whole-heartedly agree with it. I have enjoyed your blog for a year now (though rarely comment) and also think it is quite full of life :)

  164. Hi,

I've been lurking in your blog for some time, maybe the last two years without commenting in any post. But this "get a life" put me on my nerves.. I can't believe it!! I really like your blog, I check it on daily basis and I find it really nice and full of ideas... But I think your actitude was the best don't take into account those stupid comments and, please continue to share with us your LIFE. Thanks for it.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Oh my goodness me. I'm so glad I stopped over here. It's interesting that the comment was made anonymously. We could speak about what drives people to negativity and to hide behind their emotions by aggressive behavior. However, I choose LIFE as I know you do! And it bears repeating...it is in the very simple tasks of the every day that we know an extraordinary presence here on this great Mother Earth. You've long had my admiration and respect for the love and creativity you share. But you've demonstrated even more and that is a humble and modest spirit. You've got soul and this is a good place, time after time.

    Peace out! xoxo...Ana

  167. your response was nothing more than gracious, kind, and lady like. I would expect nothing less. 178. Hey Doll! I don't really try to show it but I am one of THEE most judgmental people EVAR! And my judgmental opinion is that your blog OOOOZES. Funny how people can't just move on if they don't like headless people wearing sweaters, isn't it? I wouldn't be surprised if that person doesn't even own a sweater. And I'm certain no one ever hand knit them one. Nor will anyone ever. You just keep being the fabulous mother and knitter we all would love to be.
