a surprise visitor
Thursday, September 10, 2009I tried to get over here all day yesterday. To share some knitting. And the last couple of "cookie of the weeks". However, instead I found myself keeping watch on this:
You see, in my eyes, there was a ferocious beast under the towel, under the laundry basket. A heavy (needlepoint) brick made sure that he couldn't escape. But, I didn't trust that and spent the next few hours checking in on it to make sure there was no way he could get out.
As soon as my husband got home we (he) released him. The kids wanted to keep him for a pet. We told them that they probably haven't seen the end of him. He will probably end up back in our basement very soon. Oh, joy.
Have a great one.

As suprise visitors go that is quite a sweet one :)
ReplyDeleteAugh -- small and "cute" but totally not my thing. I would have had him under a towel, laundry basket and brick too. Hope he doesn't return to your basement anytime soon.
ReplyDeleteOh my at first I thought you had whacked it with the brick! Cute little thing ... when they stay outside....
ReplyDelete*giggles* Your ferocious beast is as cute as my little hamster! =)
ReplyDeleteI am always torn when I find one in our house in VT. They are so cute, and simply looking for a warm place to hunker in, just like the rest of us in the fall. B-U-T, not so keen on having them move in, either...
ReplyDeleteI can sympathize. We've had a few of these little buggers in our basement. They are cute until they find the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteOnce I had a friend of your ferocious beast in my kitchen. The way I behaved you would have thought it was ten times bigger than me.
ReplyDeleteone word: cat.
ReplyDeleteBut the little guy looks so cute!
ReplyDeleteWe have a surprise visitor too...he's eating all the peanut butter off our traps...smart little bugger.
ReplyDeleteAwww - he's pretty cute. (agreed, however, that they are much cuter outside!)
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately for me, our fatty cat has taken to capturing and devouring little critters around our house (only partially, so we can find remains - I presume he is looking for praise).
great photo of the mouse! cats do keep the mice away. :)
ReplyDeleteI actually quite like mice, although they're pretty dirty. Cute, though. :)
ReplyDeleteBut that's why we have cats.
OMG -- I would have freaked out. In fact, I *have* freaked out -- my husband has had to come home from work in the middle of the day to deal with some of your visitor's distant relatives in California. :)
ReplyDeleteEEK ! It is that time of your again !
ReplyDeleteKim O
You are a brave woman!
ReplyDeleteIn my parents 150+ year old farm house they're just a constant visitor we constantly evict. My parents don't have a cat or dog anymore so the critters are braver.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised it didn't just get out the laundry basket vent holes, mice can squeak through a hold the size of a pencil. Not sure how they do it, but I've seen it so I believe now. lol
I would have done the same thing!
ReplyDeleteOh, but he's so tiny and cute!! Of course, if I found him in my house I would totally freak out.
ReplyDeleteAw, how cute! I'm happy you released him. Last year I kept finding tiny butterball mice in my office and wanted to keep them as friends until they ate my lollipop...
ReplyDeleteSelkie on Ravelry
Oh, eek! My son always wanted pet mice but my answer was a firm "no" on that one.
ReplyDeleteArhh but oh so cute-as long as they are not running round the house that is!
ReplyDeleteLove

If the kids want a pet, tell them it's time to get a cat.
ReplyDeletei am not a fan of rodents. not one bit. that needlepoint brick, however, i could get behind that. awesome.
ReplyDeleteI think Stuart Little is adorable!
ReplyDeleteOh he's so cute... if he came to my house he'd be eaten before I got a chance to set him free.
ReplyDeleteLove the mousetrap! The brick was a clever addition. I could hear your squeals all the way in CT ;)
ReplyDeletevery cute, indeed. as long as he's not in my house. ;)
ReplyDeleteyou are fearless. you are. good job at keeping the house safe. i had to capture a snake out of the basement...I caught it in a trashcan. you did good girl. real good.
ReplyDeletejust say no to rodents...especially in the house! I hope you were knitting and watching the beast. love your brick!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh: your hubby let the thing GO????? When you live on a poultry farm like we do, and have had HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of them crawling over your feet (totally making a girl go insane) during cleanout, these are NOT cute! Or try pulling out an auger and finding a rat kabob of about 7 RATS~BIG! (making the whole crew fall over in laughter and grossing out) Fun stuff let me tell ya! Have a mice day :)) ~Jan
ReplyDeleteOh no, oh no, oh no, I am very impressed that you had the courage to photograph. If it had been my basement you would have heard me scream right across the ocean.
ReplyDeleteOh no! He (or she) is soooo sweet!! ;o)
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that I am saying this, but that little guy is rather cute. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's as cute as can be from where I am...which is far, far away. And, take it from me..there's rarely just 1. Keep the basket, blanket & brick handy.
ReplyDeleteOh NOOOOOO! At least he wasn't in your kitchen though, right? Cuz BOY do those things poop a lot!
ReplyDeleteI won't tell you about the time I stepped on the bat (the kind that flies) before everyone got up!
ReplyDelete~laughing~
ReplyDeleteYes, it is true you will likely see him again. So totally cute, but SO FREAKING SCARY when they jump out at you and you're not expecting it, eh? Ferocious beast indeed!
Speaking of ferocious beasts - you are welcome to borrow my dogs. They are most efficient at capturing mice and dropping them at your feet. :D
My, what big eyes he has.
ReplyDeleteAnd what a ginormous mousetrap you have! Very ingenious.
Well, he's a cute little fellow but still....a mouse. in your house. yuck!
ReplyDeleteOh he's cute! Not cute as in I'd want him in my house cute, but cute none the less. I did have a pet mouse when I was a kid though...
ReplyDeleteWe used to have 17 pet mice when I was a kid. (you see one of the first ones was a mama and we didn't know it! heh.) Unfortunately my sister squashed one on the babies. oops! but all around good pets.
ReplyDeleteWe had a cat, but all he would do was tip over the aquarium we kept them in and watch them run around our basement. Peanut butter encircled by packing tape really does work to catch mice BTW!
Crissay.
We've got one or two of his cousins cavorting around in our kitchen cabinets. I'm not thinking "catch and release" at this point in the game; all my kids are out of the house, so my conscience is gone too! :)
ReplyDeleteI am not a big fan of mice! Love the look of your needlepointed brick though - what a brilliant idea.
ReplyDeleteSO cute!
ReplyDeleteI spent the last year working as a librarian at the University of Chicago. In that capacity I spent a lot of time in the storage basement, where they keep old unpopular manuscripts. The place was full of giant rats and cockroaches. If only there'd been cute little meeces!
Aw, poor little guy. He probably has a family somewhere in the neighborhood/yard. Here's hoping he takes a long trip far away from your basement. :-)
ReplyDeletemothballs - just leave a box open and a can of spray-on form sealant for any crack on an outside wall - i had them years ago but this worked- the green poison bait blocks just turned the droppings green.
ReplyDeleteEEK!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI can understand not wanting him to stick around, but he's awfully cute.
ReplyDeleteyou know, he is kinda cute. :) I grew up in a farmhouse and was the family mouse catcher (a cool whip container and determination was all I needed)- I tried keeping some for pets too.
ReplyDeleteOh my, little beasts, I suppose we will start seeing one here and there as the cold weather sets in, we are surrounded by 120 acres of farmland... nowhere else for the field mice to go to get warm but my cozy house, sigh, the cats can hardly keep up, ew...
ReplyDeleteNow how did you get that guy to pose so nicely, not that I've ever attempted to get photographic evidence of any intruding ferocious beasts, nor do I actually plan on it, but he looks like a natural little nature model!
Why do somethings so cute have to leave droppings in houses?!
Never mind, on to the knitting! and cookies- we want to see cookies!
I think that is the cutest mouse I've ever seen! I hope he only says hello from outside the house.
ReplyDeletei hate beady eyed anything...i probably would have moved out!
ReplyDeleteUgh. I do NOT like those things, and they sure like my attack!
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed you had the speed to trap him. They do carry disease and they breed at an amazing speed. Cats are the best thing for taking care of these critters.
ReplyDeleteYou are a brave soul. I will admit that the pic is cute, but I would NOT have been happy to find him in my house.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! Great thinking on the towel, laundry basket, and brick!
ReplyDeleteUgh. You were brave to stand guard. I might have called a pest control service and paid hundreds to have him removed immediately.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely creature! You were very brave to capture it like you did. :)
ReplyDeleteYour method of mouse containment is very good. I find laundry baskets have a wide repertoire of uses - believe it or not, we use ours for containing stray cats before we take them to the vet to get all fixed up!
ReplyDeletemuch much much too cute.
ReplyDeleteI love the creative mouse trap!
ReplyDeleteGlad to see someone using a needlepoint brick in this way, I have been ridiculed by my husband for having such a 'useless' object!
ReplyDeleteCute story!
ReplyDeleteI've been reading your post for a year but have never posted. Love your pictures and especially your gorgeous knitting. Bravo!
Now PLEASE tell me what you do with a needlpoint brick.
I think he just wanted to get some thread and fabric scraps to make a dress for cinderella.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit he is really cute. I'm sure my cats could come up with a few substitute words.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute little "monster"! I'm sure he'll be pushing his luck if he ends up in your basement!
ReplyDeleteHe looks very cute but I am not sure how I would react to a mouse in the house!
ReplyDeletethis little guy is only cute when he is outside scurrying in the woods! I agree with you that he is a terrifying monster when he's rummaging through, chewing on, and soiling your stuff! and I just love the mouse trap you created!
ReplyDeleteI don't think that little guy and yarn would get along very well!
ReplyDeleteOh yikes...I totally would have been keeping a close eye on that too. eeewww
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute little critter, Les! If he doesn't come back, I can bring you a few.
