hearts
Friday, February 06, 2009I had a heart shaped cookie request for this weeks cookie. Ugh. I guess my children haven't realized I don't really like doing the whole cookie cutter thing.
Then I remembered that the barefoot contessa has a shortbread recipe, that I made in the past, where the dough is just right for cutting. You know, doesn't get misshaped moving it from where you cut it, to the cookie sheet.
In her cookbook, she dips half of the heart in chocolate. Really, really delicious and pretty. I think a stack of those wrapped in a cellophane bag, tied with a ribbon, would make a really lovely little gift. Just a thought.
I am currently blocking (stretching the you know what out of) my honeycomb cardigan. I'm not exactly sure but I am thinking it may fit. (Sorry, Lis!)
Have yourself a wonderful weekend.

yes, cookies dipped in chocolate are always good!
ReplyDeletelooking forward to the sweater shot. enjoy the weekend!
That is a great shortbread recipe - I make it quite often!
ReplyDeleteI think I'll have to try it! I've been wanting to make heart cookies but I'm not a fan of iced butter cookies but these look perfect. I sure hope for your sake that the sweater fits - can't wait to see pics.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea to do shortbread instead of regular sugar cookies. I love sugar cookies, but, like you, I hate cutting them out. Mine always end up mishapen. Thanks for sharing the idea and the recipe link!
ReplyDeleteAwwww. Perfect little cookies in the prettiest wooden dish. Sweet, edible gifts that shall be well received!
ReplyDeleteYour just a big batch of Valentines inspiration this week!
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty cookie cutter - vintage? Everything becomes more decadent with chocolate dipping (although shortbread is already pretty close to perfection in my books). I'm earmarking this recipe for next week.
I love that shortbread recipe! Can't wait to see your cardigan :)
ReplyDeleteThere is always the joy of eating those scraps of dough that don't quite make it into the cookies, no matter how many times to scrunch and reroll... I'm old school, I'm not afraid to eat a little raw cookie dough, and may actually prefer it that way sometimes, I'm just sayin'...
ReplyDeleteI've got some sugar cookie dough to use up before we have to go gluten free around here (yikes!) so I'd better make the most of enjoying the process this weekend!
I'm sure the sweater turned out great, can't wait to see the pics, well, okay, I can wait, I've working on patience, and I have absolutely no control over when I get to see it, so, yeah, I can wait, but hurry up, okay?
Happy knitting-
ali
Thank you so much for posting this recipe! My work is hosting a bake sale next week (how cute is that!) for a coworker with cancer, and I want to bring something Valentine's Day-related, but I also hate dealing with sugar cookie dough. I do love shortbread though! Thanks again - have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the stretching and I love the cookie pictures, your pictures always make me want to go and bake something, in fact often they actually do make me go and do just that!
ReplyDeleteI've made these cookies from Ina, they're wonderful.
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend to you too!
Sweet cookies - I hope the sweater does fit!
ReplyDeleteYum! We were just discussing heart cookies today. I think I'll try these. You can't go wrong with that much butter.
ReplyDeleteOoh great idea. I picked up this giant lip shaped cookie cutter this year and I think I might try that recipe (although Gluten free as my daughter and I are Celiac) with the lip cookie cutter where the upper or lower lip are dipped in chocolate.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration.
Why, thank you. I would love some chocolate-dipped shortbread.
ReplyDeleteI agree about cut-out cookies - what a pain! Unfortunately, I DO love to eat them, though... Can't wait to see the sweater!
ReplyDeleteheart shaped cookies are cool. I think I am making those for Chicken's valentines this year!
ReplyDeletethe cardigan is gorgeous and the cookies look really yummy!
ReplyDeleteShortbread and chocolate, a favorite combination over here in the UK as well! I'm not big into Valentines but these I will definately try.

And a wonderful weekend it will be! I love your cookie recipe tips, great way to start the weekend.
ReplyDeleteHearts dipped in chocolate - does it get any better than that?
ReplyDeletegood luck with your cardigan!
ReplyDeletewe just made heart shaped cookies last night too...only we made frosted sandwhich cookies out of them and dipped the edges in sprinkles...Zoe loved it!
Yum...I think the heart shaped does make them taste better too.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing the cardigan!
what a beautiful post: cookies and mention of a blocking sweater. can't wait to see more!
ReplyDeleteCookies and chocolate and knitting are all so wonderful! I love Ina's recipes. I'm making a version of her roasted vegetable soup right now.
ReplyDeletethe cookies look delish. i'm sure the sweater does as well.
ReplyDeleteOh yum! I can't tell you how thankful I am for all your Heart posts. You have me seriously motivated and I am cutting out little felt hearts right now instead of the night before Valentines ;)
ReplyDeleteIna Garten has a few "no fail" recipes for cookies. Yours look delish! I know what you mean about the blocking/stretching - just finished the same technique on a cardi I made for a friend. Hope it works out!
ReplyDeleteIna to the rescue--I love her!
ReplyDeleteShortbread sounds delicious, and I love the heart-shaped platter you're using! My go-to recipe for cookie cutter cookies is the Joy of Cooking sugar drop cookies with oil. Not the best name but the cookies are delicious. They're meant to be a drop cookie but the dough rolls very easily and they work very well with the cutters.
ReplyDeleteMmmm, good idea for Valentine's Day, thx!
ReplyDeleteDeborah (Just Google Webajeb!)
thanks for the recipe leslie!
ReplyDeletethey are/were delish!
I love shortbread cookies. All the sweeter when they are heart shaped!
ReplyDeleteI love shortbread!!! Yum! Ina Garten always has really great, simple successful recipes!
ReplyDeleteThese cute cookies are even prettier in this heart plate... You got a beautiful blog.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed for you!
ReplyDeleteWell, if you have to do a shape, those scalloped hearts are the best choice.
ReplyDeleteI just did the barefoot contessa's lemon bars this weekend. Love that Ina!
Yum!
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to make valentine's day cookie cutter cookies but don't want to deal with the icing part. Thanks for reminding me that shortbread works well! Those look delicious.
ReplyDeleteThe pictures really make me want to try it! I have a cookie cutter like that, only it is a star. I think that it is my great-grandma's. They look yummy!
ReplyDeleteI have made a ton of heart-shaped decorated cookies (lots of royal icing in my condo) in the last couple of weeks. I have one more batch to go, but I admit that I'm looking forward to a less demanding cookie project no matter how tasty it is.
