hearts

I had a heart shaped cookie request for this weeks cookie. Ugh. I guess my children haven't realized I don't really like doing the whole cookie cutter thing.
Then I remembered that the barefoot contessa has a shortbread recipe, that I made in the past, where the dough is just right for cutting.  You know, doesn't get misshaped moving it from where you cut it, to the cookie sheet.
In her cookbook, she dips half of the heart in chocolate.  Really, really delicious and pretty.  I think a stack of those wrapped in a cellophane bag, tied with a ribbon, would make a really lovely little gift.  Just a thought.

I am currently blocking (stretching the you know what out of) my honeycomb cardigan.  I'm not exactly sure but I am thinking it may fit.  (Sorry, Lis!)
Have yourself a wonderful weekend.

  3. I think I'll have to try it! I've been wanting to make heart cookies but I'm not a fan of iced butter cookies but these look perfect. I sure hope for your sake that the sweater fits - can't wait to see pics.

  4. What a great idea to do shortbread instead of regular sugar cookies. I love sugar cookies, but, like you, I hate cutting them out. Mine always end up mishapen. Thanks for sharing the idea and the recipe link!

  6. Your just a big batch of Valentines inspiration this week!

What a pretty cookie cutter - vintage? Everything becomes more decadent with chocolate dipping (although shortbread is already pretty close to perfection in my books). I'm earmarking this recipe for next week.

  8. There is always the joy of eating those scraps of dough that don't quite make it into the cookies, no matter how many times to scrunch and reroll... I'm old school, I'm not afraid to eat a little raw cookie dough, and may actually prefer it that way sometimes, I'm just sayin'...
I've got some sugar cookie dough to use up before we have to go gluten free around here (yikes!) so I'd better make the most of enjoying the process this weekend!

I'm sure the sweater turned out great, can't wait to see the pics, well, okay, I can wait, I've working on patience, and I have absolutely no control over when I get to see it, so, yeah, I can wait, but hurry up, okay?

    Happy knitting-

Thank you so much for posting this recipe! My work is hosting a bake sale next week (how cute is that!) for a coworker with cancer, and I want to bring something Valentine's Day-related, but I also hate dealing with sugar cookie dough. I do love shortbread though! Thanks again - have a great weekend!

Ooh great idea. I picked up this giant lip shaped cookie cutter this year and I think I might try that recipe (although Gluten free as my daughter and I are Celiac) with the lip cookie cutter where the upper or lower lip are dipped in chocolate.

    Thanks for the inspiration.

Ina Garten has a few "no fail" recipes for cookies. Yours look delish! I know what you mean about the blocking/stretching - just finished the same technique on a cardi I made for a friend. Hope it works out!

  30. Shortbread sounds delicious, and I love the heart-shaped platter you're using! My go-to recipe for cookie cutter cookies is the Joy of Cooking sugar drop cookies with oil. Not the best name but the cookies are delicious. They're meant to be a drop cookie but the dough rolls very easily and they work very well with the cutters.

  37. Well, if you have to do a shape, those scalloped hearts are the best choice.

I just did the barefoot contessa's lemon bars this weekend. Love that Ina!

I've been wanting to make valentine's day cookie cutter cookies but don't want to deal with the icing part. Thanks for reminding me that shortbread works well! Those look delicious.

  40. I have made a ton of heart-shaped decorated cookies (lots of royal icing in my condo) in the last couple of weeks. I have one more batch to go, but I admit that I'm looking forward to a less demanding cookie project no matter how tasty it is.
