honeycomb cardigan
Monday, February 09, 2009Well, after much stretching, I can fit into my honeycomb cardigan. When I first put it on I like it, and actually think it fits fine.
See, not too tight across the back.
However, after I have it on for a while, (a minute or two) it pulls across the chest. Mistake #1: since I raised the neckline, I should have also added more buttons. Darn. But, I figure that I don't always have to wear it buttoned.
And if I want to wear it buttoned? Presto. Cover it with a scarf.
All in all, I really like this cardigan and am sure it will get a lot of wear. I prefer sweaters that can be worn as a coat.
Pattern: Moorland Honeycomb Cardigan
Size: Small (Mistake #2, should have made a Medium)
Yarn: 9 balls Moorland 2576, bark by Classic Elite
Needle: Size US 6
Modifications: I actually did a few and will post them on ravelry. If you are not on there and are interested in my modifications, I can let you know through e-mail.
And for those of you who think that I should just go ahead and give this to my sister, I would if I could. However, a much smaller sister also has much shorter arms. :)
Enjoy your day!

That is so pretty! I love it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely knit - I love your scarf cover (which I use buttons.... stains.... etc!) It's a classic!! :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the button band would not gape so much if you sewed a length of grosgrain ribbon to the inside. You've found some good solutions anyway, though!
Once again...a terrific looking sweater!
ReplyDeleteI love the color and sympathize with the button issue. But how smart of you to hide it with a long scarf! So much better than froggin...
ReplyDeleteYou are making me want to knit a long cardigan you bad girl.
Andrea
gorgeous, leslie!!
ReplyDeleteoh, it looks so lovely, even if it does stretch out a bit in the boob region. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely cardigan--I love the pattern and the color! Makes me want to get through my current projects (all gifts) and knit something for me to wear!!
ReplyDeleteNope. Keep it. You Tim Gunn'd it or "made it work." Love it with the scarf!
ReplyDeleteLove it - I am inspired. ♥
ReplyDeleteHow about grosgrain on the inside of the button bands and place some sizely snaps! It just may work!
ReplyDeleteAre they barmey?! Why on earth would you give this lovely knit away. Enjoy it. It looks great on you.

ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful. I have problems with fit in my sweaters too. :-p But it's gorgeous with the scarf so wear proudly.
ReplyDeleteOh I was so excited when I saw this post was up, I've been waiting to see this one because of course, you always knit the things I want to knit! It's beautiful Leslie, I love the shape of this one and the yarn is perfect. It did occur to me that you could add a little popper in between those buttons but I would probably just wear it open or with the scarf. Gorgeous work once again.
ReplyDeletelovely!! That's a great color on you and I love the swingy shape. I wish I had the patience to knit something that long.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! The scarf fix works for me. :)
ReplyDeleteIf you only want to wear it closed, a strip of velcro sewn in would fix that...
When I grow up, I want to knit as beautiful as you do! LOVE the sweater..it's a very flattering style and color. Nice work:)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great looking cardigan! You did a great job and it looks wonderful on you. I really like how the longer lenghth looks on you.
ReplyDeleteYes, you must have modified it quite a bit! It looks so much lovelier than the original. I'm always impressed when people take a pattern that I wouldn't think twice about and create something jaw-dropping!
ReplyDeleteIt looks fabulous, and so wearable too. I like the neckline you did, and I hope that the button issue doesn't put you off wearing it, as it definitely deserves to be seen out in public!
ReplyDeleteit looks really great! it's on my to-make list. :)
ReplyDeleteit drapes very nicely and and has a great overall shape. i really like it and the scarf gives the entire look that j'ai ne sais quoi. well done!
ReplyDeleteAdina
very pretty and the scarf works...
ReplyDeleteoh I really like it!! I've been a bit intimidated to try an adult sized sweater, but everytime I see something you have made, it inspires me to want to give it a go! Nice job!
ReplyDeleteOh, it's beautiful, and looks great on you! I love the color and mods you made.
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful. Looks wonderful on you. I do hear you about the button/gap situation though.
ReplyDeleteYou might check out artsycraftybabe.typepad.com
her entry on January 8, 2009 may be an idea. It worked for her and I will try it when blocking the next sweater I make that is not for my 2 year old granddaughter:-)
It is gorgeous! I love the color of the yarn and the longer length. I thought the ideas about adding grosgrain ribbon and/or snaps was a smart idea.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Love the scarf fix :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks beautiful on you. You could always reknit the button bands and add more buttons to it too.
ReplyDeletethat's great that after all that work it fits you! the pulling would be a bit of a nuisance, but definitely still wearable, especially with the scarf. :)
ReplyDeleteI love it, I love it, I love it!!!!
ReplyDeleteLooks great! Don't worry about the front too much, maybe once you wear it out a little it won't be as noticable.
ReplyDeleteOhmygosh! That's a gorgeous sweater -- pulling or no pulling ;-). I love it with the scarf too. Very, very clever!
ReplyDeletereally wonderful... and it looks great on you.
ReplyDeleteA scarf is a perfect fix for pulling buttons. The sweater is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteOh, it turned out GREAT!!! YAY! And, I say wear it buttoned, but only do the one button, right below the bustline. TOO cute!
ReplyDeleteNow, if only I can learn to knit - LOL!!! As always, you inspire me to get started!!! - Erin
This is fabulous - I'd say button one button too - no matter how many I have, I seem to do that! It is gorgeous! Sorry little sister!
ReplyDeleteyou wear it well!
ReplyDeletenice job!
Lovely!!
ReplyDeleteAnd you could always do a little surgery on it and add more buttonholes if you wanted to
Your sweater is great ! I give you lots of points for the large amount of knitting to get such a nice long sweater. The scarf works well too. .The fit and changes seems to all be a part of everyones knitting tales. Overall I think it's great
ReplyDeleteI think it looks wonderful on you! You are so talented!
ReplyDeleteAnother beautiful knit Leslie...loving the color and the mods you made to the pattern. Your scarf solution looks perfect to me! Very stylish.
ReplyDeletelove (1)
ReplyDelete:-) Mimi
Oh, I think it looks great - and knitwear stretches, eventually, so maybe you'll like how it fits later. (Though I think it looks great now.) Question: how do you pick your patterns? You always pick great ones that aren't already on everyone's list!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I'd be too selfish to give it away... ;) so I won't tell you that she might be more than happy to roll the cuffs once...or pick out a row or two & reknit the cuff...
ReplyDeleteIt turned out fabulous Leslie...I like it so much better with the higher neckline. The sweater looks great on you! Nicely done...once again.
ReplyDeletethis is beautiful, with or without the scarf, nice choice of colour and loves the buttons too.
ReplyDeleteis it "heavy" ? i love to knit one too even though it is not suitable to wear in this hot n humid place.
hmm...need to go to a winter holiday end of the year to be able to wear it ! can this be an excuss ?? LOL
Oh she can always turn the sleeves up! but of course I'd want to keep it myself (if I were you) ;-) Looks fab!
ReplyDeletekeep it! it's so beautiful, leslie. and i love your scarf solution. you smart cookie.
ReplyDeleteThis is so lovely regardless. And I love that scarf on top.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I was going to mention a scarf...you beat me to it. Really, it looks lovely on you - such a great color.
ReplyDeleteYou'd be crazy to give this one away. It looks so good on you!!!
ReplyDeleteI must buy this pattern book!
Beautiful :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I love how you raised the neckline. The fit turned out really nice.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great. Stylish :) Hope you fix the button bit
ReplyDeleteJust gorgeous! I love the clever scarf solution : )
ReplyDeleteit is a beautiful cardigan! you did a great job!
ReplyDeleteit is gorgeous!!! i want the same!
ReplyDeleteLooks great.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. Absolutely Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteyour hands are fairy's hands!!
ReplyDeletewonderful work!
It's so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteGreat problem solving. I love the cardi though.
ReplyDeleteLove it! Love the color too! The scarf solution cracked me up - will have to remember that one for future use.
ReplyDeleteYour cardigan is so lovely...don't give it away! The colour really suits you and it is a good excuse to wear a scarve.
ReplyDeleteThe style and shape suits your long lines beautifully. The scarf adds a splash of color, accentuates the detail that are your perfect stitches and gives that "comfort fit" when buttoned. Wearable art of your hands. Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I like the length, it is so pretty. :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous as always. Both the knit and the model.
ReplyDeleteI think it looks lovely on you! I also noticed that in the pattern book, its pulling across the front on the model too. Could be a design flaw...
ReplyDeleteYou wear browns so well. This one is adorable Leslie.
ReplyDeleteI think it looks perfect, love it with the green scarf especially!
ReplyDeleteI think yours is much nicer than the original, and it looks great with the scarf
ReplyDeleteWhat a great sweater! That's disappointing that it pulls in the front like that. I love the color you picked to knit it in. I am working on my first sweater over on my blog. I hope to finish it this week!
ReplyDeleteawesome!
ReplyDeleteWow! Beautiful! Congrats! (!!)
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! And the scarf is a perfect coverup. :)
ReplyDeleteI still think it is beautiful. Looks like a perfect "going for a walk" sweater.
ReplyDeleteit's just lovely and it looks so great on you!!! you and your knitting blow. me. away!!!
ReplyDeleteI love this! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteLove it! So pretty!
ReplyDeleteGood thinkin', Blinkin', with the scarf thing. Looks great!
ReplyDeleteYou could also sew some invisible snaps in there between the buttons. That would take care of any gapping. I actually do that on my dress shirts sometimes, as I'm a skinny gal with ample boosiasms, and often have the pulling-accross-the-gals problem.
I love the cardigan and like you, I enjoy cardigans that can be worn as a coat. I would bet that the pulling might disappear with wear. Really great job...it is a beautiful knit and the color you chose is wonderful.
ReplyDeletethat is one beautiful coat. and i love your idea of using the scarf to hide the stretched part and, also, to add a nice touch to the whole look!
ReplyDelete-nana
I think it's lovely and love that scarf trick!
ReplyDeleteCute and utterly wearable!
ReplyDeleteI love it! It's looks so comfy and cozy.
ReplyDeleteI think you made the right decision to nix the 6" ribbing at the bottom. The garter stitch border is much more flattering.
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful....and the gaps in front...that's the story of my life. You have the perfect solution.
ReplyDeleteThe sweater looks great. You might try sewing grosgrain ribbon onto the back of the button bands; sometimes that reinforces it just enough to prevent gapping. Though I really like the scarf...
ReplyDeleteLooks great on you. I vote for snaps. I've been known to stitch cardigans closed where they pull (I'm a bit on the busty side). Then you're stuck wearing it closed, though.
ReplyDeleteWow! Beautiful. Just added to my Ravelry faves!
ReplyDeleteI think it looks fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThat's a beauty! Love the color, the length, the style. Mmm... good choice.
ReplyDeleteWhat if you just close the top button or the top two? What happens then? Or did someone comment on that already?
I'm crazy over the scarf combo.
You did a great job!
That is just beautiful. Looks like it fits you perfectly. What an awesome color to wear with anything. Nice job and enjoy!!

I love this sweater and the fact that it's almost a jacket makes it so versatile. Even with the button issue I think it's amazing. (I'd probably wear it unbuttoned, anyway, and your scarf solution is perfect.)
ReplyDeleteWhen sewing they often recommend that you put a button right at the bustline and then space the remainder of your buttons from there. I'm not sure I would have liked that solution here. You would have ended up with buttons very widely spaced or lots of smaller buttons. I like the size and number of buttons you have and the sweater is beautiful on you--truly inspiring! I have a couple of ideas but no clear way to express them in this type of forum.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this cardigan! Must knit for myself!
ReplyDeletethats a beautiful sweater.
ReplyDeleteI love sweaters like that.
I would have to add pockets though, i need pockets. :D
Love it! I'd go with a few well placed snappers too. Had to do this with Lily's Brambling jacket as even with lots of buttons it was still trying to gape a little.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous. I think it looks great!
ReplyDeletesorry the fit wasn't perfect but I love the length and texture at the top. You look absolutely fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI love the texture on the top, and what a lovely and versatile color.
ReplyDeleteIts beautiful Leslie, it fits great en you. Nice job!!!
ReplyDeleteSo lovely. Even if it doesnt fit exactly it is still adorable.
ReplyDeleteleslie, i love it. i think it looks great. in the second photo, where the buttons pull a bit, i think it looks like it is supposed to be like that. i think you will wear it a ton. can't wait to see what is next!
ReplyDeleteIt looks so beautiful on you Leslie. And so much nicer than the original.
ReplyDeleteI think your modifications were key to brilliant success! I saw the original and didn't give it a second thought, but your version is quite nice. I want one of my own!
ReplyDeleteYou (and your Honeycomb) are amazing! I dub thee the "Mistress of Lemons to Lemonade".
ReplyDeleteThe fit across the back is dead on. And your fix for the openness in front? A brilliant excuse to knit more cute neck wear.
me and a friend have issues with buttons since we have big breasts :) I usually don't even buy shirts, because the buttons will just pull. The other day she told me, she sews on "snaps" between buttons... They don't show outside of the shirt/sweater, but will be able to pull the two sides together. I am not sure if it will work with a knit piece, but it might be worth giving it a try...
