honeycomb cardigan

Monday, February 09, 2009

Well, after much stretching,  I can fit into my honeycomb cardigan.  When I first put it on I like it, and actually think it fits fine.
See, not too tight across the back.
However, after I have it on for a while, (a minute or two) it pulls across the chest.  Mistake #1: since I raised the neckline, I should have also added more buttons.  Darn.  But, I figure that I don't always have to wear it buttoned.
And if I want to wear it buttoned?  Presto.  Cover it with a scarf.

All in all, I really like this cardigan and am sure it will get a lot of wear.  I prefer sweaters that can be worn as a coat.
Size:  Small (Mistake #2, should have made a Medium)
Yarn:  9 balls Moorland 2576, bark by Classic Elite
Needle: Size US 6
Modifications:  I actually did a few and will post them on ravelry.  If you are not on there and are interested in my modifications, I can let you know through e-mail.
And for those of you who think that I should just go ahead and give this to my sister, I would if I could.  However,  a much smaller sister also has much shorter arms.  :)
Enjoy your day!

    It looks wonderful!

I wonder if the button band would not gape so much if you sewed a length of grosgrain ribbon to the inside. You've found some good solutions anyway, though!

  14. Oh I was so excited when I saw this post was up, I've been waiting to see this one because of course, you always knit the things I want to knit! It's beautiful Leslie, I love the shape of this one and the yarn is perfect. It did occur to me that you could add a little popper in between those buttons but I would probably just wear it open or with the scarf. Gorgeous work once again.

  43. Oh, I think it looks great - and knitwear stretches, eventually, so maybe you'll like how it fits later. (Though I think it looks great now.) Question: how do you pick your patterns? You always pick great ones that aren't already on everyone's list!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Gorgeous! I'd be too selfish to give it away... ;) so I won't tell you that she might be more than happy to roll the cuffs once...or pick out a row or two & reknit the cuff...

  76. Good thinkin', Blinkin', with the scarf thing. Looks great!

You could also sew some invisible snaps in there between the buttons. That would take care of any gapping. I actually do that on my dress shirts sometimes, as I'm a skinny gal with ample boosiasms, and often have the pulling-accross-the-gals problem.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I love the cardigan and like you, I enjoy cardigans that can be worn as a coat. I would bet that the pulling might disappear with wear. Really great job...it is a beautiful knit and the color you chose is wonderful.

  81. I love it! It's looks so comfy and cozy.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I think you made the right decision to nix the 6" ribbing at the bottom. The garter stitch border is much more flattering.

    ReplyDelete
  83. It's beautiful....and the gaps in front...that's the story of my life. You have the perfect solution.

    ReplyDelete
  84. The sweater looks great. You might try sewing grosgrain ribbon onto the back of the button bands; sometimes that reinforces it just enough to prevent gapping. Though I really like the scarf...

    ReplyDelete
  85. Looks great on you. I vote for snaps. I've been known to stitch cardigans closed where they pull (I'm a bit on the busty side). Then you're stuck wearing it closed, though.

I'm crazy over the scarf combo.

    You did a great job!

  90. I love this sweater and the fact that it's almost a jacket makes it so versatile. Even with the button issue I think it's amazing. (I'd probably wear it unbuttoned, anyway, and your scarf solution is perfect.)

    ReplyDelete
  91. When sewing they often recommend that you put a button right at the bustline and then space the remainder of your buttons from there. I'm not sure I would have liked that solution here. You would have ended up with buttons very widely spaced or lots of smaller buttons. I like the size and number of buttons you have and the sweater is beautiful on you--truly inspiring! I have a couple of ideas but no clear way to express them in this type of forum.

Love it! I'd go with a few well placed snappers too. Had to do this with Lily's Brambling jacket as even with lots of buttons it was still trying to gape a little.

me and a friend have issues with buttons since we have big breasts :) I usually don't even buy shirts, because the buttons will just pull. The other day she told me, she sews on "snaps" between buttons... They don't show outside of the shirt/sweater, but will be able to pull the two sides together. I am not sure if it will work with a knit piece, but it might be worth giving it a try...
