december 1

Monday, December 01, 2008

So, it's December 1, and somehow I seem to be stuck in October.  Or maybe wishing it still was October.  I mentioned last year, that I wanted to make the advent calendar like Garnet Hill.

Make a couple a month.  No problem.  Fast forward twelve months.  Not a single one was made. They started popping up again, and I got the urge to make them. I managed to make four over the course of last weekend.  Just to get a jump start.  Now, I guess that I will have to make one a day, just to stay ahead of the game.  I must admit these are not my favorite things to make.  Easy enough, but as soon as you think that you are finished, you have to embroider the number, crochet a chain, and perhaps make a pom-pom.  I just want to keep knitting.
One could wing the pattern, but why, when it is clearly written out here.
Happy December!

  1. Neat idea. I've seen various advent calendar ideas in the past week... many I've wanted to try out. But for some reason, this year has slipped by so so quickly. We're in December already?

  3. Oh, good for you, actually doing it! I told myself when I saw it in the catalog (last year? two years ago?) I thought I could make that, so why buy it? And yet... and yet... and yet... I haven't done it, and hate knitting little, fidgety things that require more sewing than knitting.. and so. Still no advent mittens for me. I shoulda just bought 'em!

  4. I saw this and fell in love . . . too late! I decided to make the mittens and hats in felt this year and try to make the knitted one for next year. I found some great wool felt in beautiful colors - I think it will look just fine.

  5. Oh so cute! I feel your pain -- I wanted to do one out of stockings. I got one started at the beginning of November, but that's as far as it went. Maybe next year LOL. Good luck with yours -- I'll be rooting for you!

  7. So cute! I had planned to make a cool artsy advent calendar with magnets on the back of a cookie sheet a la Theresa McFadden and here it is Dec. 1. I like your idea of doing the project during the advent season. Your knitting is wonderful!

They are so cute, but that would just be way too much pressure for me! I have every confidence that you will finish all of them.

  9. I had great ambitions for an Advent calendar too. Yes, great ambitions.

(I cheated today and bought an Advent calendar box of candies from Starbucks as they were on clearance since this was the last day they could sell them. I can put something else in the holes next year instead of the candy, right?)

  10. Maybe you could alternate knitted items, such as mittens, then hats (nice and easy), and then mini socks. At least it would provide some variety.

They do look rather nice though. Hmmm! The first isn't quite over. Maybe I could whip one up still tonight.

  22. Those are too freakin' cute! I've never been big on Advent calendars...not something of a tradition from childhood, I guess...but lately I've seen some really cute ones. This project could be a little time consuming, especially as you are knitting them and embellishing, but oh the joy of having them done. Super cool. And more lovely links to follow. Thanks! Happy 2nd of December! :)

  30. This is such an inspired idea and I remember thinking the same thing last year. And once again here I am thinking 'next year I have to do that'. I'm going to send myself an e-mail reminder for October 1, 2009! Ha ha. I'm looking forward to watching yours come along in the meantime though.

  31. So do you put a little surprise inside each mitten then? I've been pondering having a more interactive advent calendar--we have a paper chain countdown. But I sort of like the idea of having something I can put an activity into. Hmm. I could knit a couple of mittens a month and be ready by next year.

    What? I could too. :-)
