mystery socks
Thursday, October 30, 2008Libby's turn to stand on the table.
And Libby's turn to receive a new pair of socks.
I loved working on these socks. And knowing so many others were making them at the same time seemed to add to the fun.
Pattern: Through the Loops Mystery socks for Socktoberfest (thank you, Kirsten!)
Yarn: Debbie Bliss, baby cashmerino. Color 202. It is not sock yarn. So, Kim let me in on a little secret which a lot of you probably know. (I didn't.)
To reinforce the heel, hold a piece of thread together with your yarn, as you knit. (Okay, okay, probably ranks right up there with the freezer paper story. I just didn't know this either!)

Needles: size 3 dpn's
size: 56 stitch
Libby skipped off to school this morning wearing these. Well, I don't think that she was actually skipping. But have you skipped lately? You should really give it a try.
Have a great one!

What a good tip with the thread!
ReplyDeleteGreat socks! Thanks for the tip...hadn't heard it yet :).
ReplyDeleteThey're awesome. I'm sure she's thrilled.
ReplyDeleteDo you keep the thread in the freezer? ;)
Those are beautiful! I love the color.
ReplyDeleteHey, I didn't know that about the thread in the heel either!
ReplyDeleteThe socks are beautiful!
They are truly beautiful! I'm sure Libby will look like a princess in her fancy socks.
ReplyDeleteOh, you're funny. Skipping! Anyway. The socks came out GREAT. Very cute!
ReplyDeleteLoving those socks. Making me wonder why I didn't get in on this mystery!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the pic of your finished socks. They turned out beautifully -- I don't blame your daughter for wearing them to school, I would have done the same thing. Through your blog, I was following the Through the Loops mystery --- it was fun to spectate as well.
ReplyDeletelove them! you have been busy!
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! I wish I had finished mine (I'm still on clue #2!).
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing that tip, I would have never thought of it.
Love the socks! Especially the colour. You've been really busy. I'd skip for socks like that... lol
ReplyDeleteMy son and I skipped together the other day. It really was fun, and it was so cute to watch him try to keep the rhythm. Skipping is hard!
ReplyDeleteLove the socks! Does it have to be nylon thread that you reinforce with? Or will any thread do.....
I would be skipping in these lovely socks :)
ReplyDeletethese are so sweet! the solid pastel color really shows off the cables perfectly. my belly doesn't allow much skipping these days (expecting a baby any minute now), but the only thing I remember being even more satisfying than skipping is galloping -- have you tried that one?
ReplyDeleteThey look great! And I didn't know the thread tip. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know the thread tip...the socks are great! I'm stilling knitting away on mine! Congrats on finishing them!
ReplyDeleteohmygosh. They are SO cute. Seriously. I love the rib on top. And the pattern in the rest of the sock. geez.
ReplyDeletevery very pretty. i think i'll have to try making these ... loved your boys socks as well.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE THESE SOCKS!!!
ReplyDeleteThose look great. I've heard the tip before, but have always been too lazy to incorporate it (or considered it too fiddly). I should try it the next time I make socks for my hubby, so the heels will last longer than a couple short months!
ReplyDeleteAs one of 3 sisters I can tell "girl" feet. The arch was a dead give away. Love these socks. And hope Libby knew a good day! :) Ana
ReplyDeletei might need these for myself. they are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteand yes, i skip often. seriously. everyday that we walk to school we skip at least one block. it's good for the soul!
These are gorgeous! Thank you for passing along the thread tip - so easy I would have never thought of it:)
ReplyDeleteI love skipping!!

ReplyDeleteThey are lovely socks maybe they can be the second pair that I ever knit!!
ReplyDeleteThey came out great, and I love the color. Everyone is happy!
ReplyDeleteNice tip, I'll certainly remember that. Congrats for finishing all the socks on time!
ReplyDeleteI love them. I really do. that color is perfect.
ReplyDeleteOh those are beautiful and I can only imagine how soft they feel on her feet... Yum.
ReplyDeleteSooo cute! Your kids are so lucky having you for a Mom. Love the color of Libby's socks....
ReplyDeleteGreat minds think alike, I'm also giving these to my daughter!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful socks!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
Oooh gorgeous colour, gorgeous pattern and gorgeous feet!
ReplyDeleteCame out beautiful.. I love the color...
ReplyDeleteI'm new to knitting so I didn't know, thanks for the tip! Hoping to start on my first socks soon, after I finish up some Christmas scarves.
ReplyDeleteI've heard that sewing thread is not good to use as it cuts through the wool. Please let us know how the heels on these hold up so we know which method works best.
ReplyDeleteThose are the cutest socks! This pattern just might get me to knit a pair. Adorable.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea you could reinforce the heal by holding a piece of thread with the yarn - but I am glad that I know now because I think this socks are going into my que.
Beautiful socks, right down to the eye of partridge(?) heel. Most fortunate daughter!
ReplyDeleteMine are almost finished!! EEEE!!!
ReplyDeleteThey look absolutely gorgeous. And DB Cashmerino! Yummy for the feet!
ReplyDeleteCould you adopt me into your family? I love all the knitted love you've been providing your family with lately. Yeah, I know I'm too old to adopt and besides, I would come with baggage (but you never know, those bags may be filled with yarn....hehe :).
ReplyDeleteSweet socks! Sweet color!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous socks - you have the luckiest kids!! (I didn't know about the thread in the heel, either... thanks for letting the secret out!)
ReplyDeleteGreat socks !!! I had no idea about the thread and I've heard a lot working in the lys.
ReplyDeleteJust a brief FYI on reinforcing the heel or toe....you must use the same fiber content (and ideally the same weight). This is because the stronger of the two strands will wear and cut the weaker. For example, you would never use polyester thread with cotton yarn.
ReplyDeleteI skipped just the other day, and I'm still taking Aleeve. I had to pass this on...my Finnish friend's parents and grandparents use dental floss instead of string on the heels. Genius (depending on the color of yarn, anyway)! Ever try to break a length of floss by pulling? No way!!
ReplyDeleteHello Leslie, Thank you for your tips If you want to see the result, I've posted the pictures. I'll finish the rabbit tomorrow. Great socks! I wish I knew how to knit on 4 needles. Does anybody know a tutorial about this?
ReplyDeleteI love the socks...just found you through a friend, and I think I'm hooked.
ReplyDeleteSkipping...what fond memories! I bet Libby is a happy one, the socks are Awesome!
ReplyDeleteGreat socks. I didn't know about the thread- so thanks for the tip!
ReplyDeleteLibby must have very cosy snug feet now! These are very beautiful decadent socks I think!
ReplyDeletegorgeous socks and thanks for the tip!!
ReplyDeleteangie
You are prolific!
ReplyDeleteThese are so pretty! I would wear them right away too:)
ReplyDeleteThese are beautiful! Love love love the color! I also love that you changed the cables a bit too!
ReplyDeleteAt your suggestion, I did...and I giggled the entire time! ;)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful :)
ReplyDeleteThose are beautiful socks! I can understand why she would skip! :) I agree, isn't it fun to do!
ReplyDeleteCute socks. Glad to see a family member likes them. I would love to knit socks for my family but they wont wear them!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about the thread idea either but the heel is not where I have the problem, it is the part of the foot under the heel. I always seem to wear a hole there. Any ideas on how to fix that? I still wear the socks as I don't seem to notice the hole on hand knitted socks & they still feel good!
Beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteGreat tip! Thanks for sharing that.
ReplyDeleteAwwww, thos are AMAZING!
ReplyDeleteThose socks are beautiful! I love the color. And no, I hadn't heard that tip about the thread before. I had heard about weaving a nylon thread through the heel before, but that just seems like a big pain in the butt. =)
