bake some bread
Thursday, October 23, 2008On Tuesday, I read about Molly's new weekly commitment called one good loaf.
And shortly after I was in the kitchen making a bread that I have wanted to try since I saw it on Rachel's blog this summer. I have thought about this bread. And that photo. No less than 100 times. Finally, I had the push I needed to go make it.
It was so good, that I made it again today.
Because truly, is there anything better than the smell of bread baking?
The only thing that may be better is, eating it warm, topped with the jam that you made in the summer, after reading this post. I love how it was all inspired by blogs.
I'm not sure if I will be baking bread every week, but Molly has started a flickr group where you can go for recipes. What a great thing. And the next loaf that I try will quite possibly be this one.

looks delicious...we've been cooking and baking here too! Something about fall makes me want to bake. I'll have to try the bread recipe. Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to see the vest unfolded :)

ReplyDeleteSigh... I'm SO not a baker. I can rock a main meal like nobody's business, but I just can't seem to find the energy or time for cookies, cakes and breads. Your blog sure makes me want to find the time... But then, when would I knit?

My hubby has a great recipe for Wholewheat honey bread. We buy the wholewheat 'whole' and grind it ourselves :) we still use the bread machine though, it's just so easy. Can't wait to see your vest.

Oh - I REALLY need you to stop posting all of your baking... I don't have time to clean my house for our family coming this weekend, eat dinner, or any of the things I need to get done. Yet somehow, I find time to make batch after batch of your cookies, pumpkin bread, banana bread, and now I'm thinking I need to stop on the way home to get yeast. It looks delicious...

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of her blog! I've just started trying to bake all our bread needs so learning about this group was very fitting. And I agree--there aren't many things better than slicing a warm loaf right from the oven and spreading some home-made jam on it!
ReplyDeleteI love the smell of baking bread. When I was a stay at home Mom, I made most of our bread. The nest is empty now, so not too much bread making has been going on. About 2 months ago I got the urge to try to make sour dough bread. I bought the stuff to make the starter and got it going. I now make a loaf of sour dough bread for my hubby and myself once a week. It is soooooooo good. I do use the bread machine for the mixing, first kneading and the first rising. Then I do the rest on the bread board and in a regular oven. I had forgotten the satisfaction of having made my own bread.

ReplyDeleteYumm! Fresh baked bread IS the best! Just not so nice on the hips & thighs. :( I have been trying to do a cookie a week (inspired by you!). Last one was Almond Joy Bars - oooh sooo gooood!! Quick recipe: 1.5 cups graham cracker crumbs mixed with .5 cup melted butter: press into 9x13 baking dish: blend together 7oz.coconut & 1 can Eagle Brand sweetened cond.milk (yum): pour over grah.crack.crumbs & bake 18-20 min.or until lightly brown: melt 2 cups semi-sweet choc.chips & .5 cup smooth peanut butter: stir until smooth & spread over baked bars while still warm: top with almonds: cool 30 min.: refrigerate 30-45 min.until set: cut into bars & enjoy! so easy: so good! On a knit note - you are the fastest knitter I have ever seen - great-looking vest! love seeing your family photos of vacations, girl trips & knitwear! Love your blog!

Ok, I've taken your advice. I put all my unfinished projects in a basket and I'm picking away at them. I'm almost finished with one of the baby sweaters. To reward myself for completeing these projects will be a sweater for me and a vest for my husband - inspired by you.

I bought a used bread machine and have been making bread with that instead of buying. Not the same as kneading, but at least you get the smell of baked bread in the house. The vest is lovely.

I've been trying to beak bread, but it keeps coming out doughy instead of light and fluffy like it's supposed to, not matter how long I bake it. Any suggestions?

...okay, enough of that mushy stuff... ;) Thanks for the link to the vest pattern, I had issues at the v-neck last time I tried to knit my own sweater vest for the boys.
I have made this recipe twice since reading your blog. My favourite way so far was last nights version baked as a pizza dough. I used 1 cup of whole wheat flour, and the rest was spelt flour. Topped it with sauce, proscuito (spelling error I am sure), florentine sausage (with spinach, and swiss cheese), and mozza and it was heaven on a pan. I have to thank you because it wouldn't have been as good had I not read your post!
