Wednesday, April 30, 2008I know, I am now a header hopper. I really appreciate all of your comments about that cookie/sock header I previously had (for a short while) above. And I did like it too. However, every time I looked at it, it reminded me of colder weather. Maybe it was all the red. And the ginger. But whatever it was, I decided I needed a little spring color. And since my littlest guy still makes me joyfully happy when he picks me dandelions, I decided that I needed a photo of his lastest pick up there. And a little bit of spring. Changing headers can be quite addictive too. You all do know about Picnik, right? Especially helpful to us blogger users.
Onto the knitting. I am pretty close to finishing Ruby. I have made little progress the last couple of days trying to figure out the welt. I should have listened to Rebecca, knowing that she kept getting holes too. The pattern reads y2rn = yarn round needle twice. Isn't that just yarn over twice? I checked books. All of the on-line resources I knew. Isn't the point of a yarn over, a hole? Well, this sweater does not want holes! Anyhow, I ended up doing my own thing which gave me the amount of stitches that I needed. Marking the location of the increases and increasing 4 in each location, by a M1 and an Inc into the f/b on the first row Increase. On the second row increase, I increased into the f/b of each of the new stitches. Have you seen Rebecca's? Or Pax's? They are both fabulous. I am a bit nervous though because Rebecca used four extra balls. Pax did not, however made her sleeves shorter. I slimmed my sleeves down a bit, in hopes of not having to buy more yarn. And what a bummer it would be if I needed more as I know my store does not have the same dyelot.
I didn't intend to post this recipe, but when I cut a piece of this cookie/cake type thing for my breakfast, I noticed the heart. Of course, I had to take a photo for Noticing project's be our guest week, and thought maybe you would like the recipe.

thanks for the recipe! I'm going to use it today. Every time my husband or I run to the store, we buy another pint of strawberries and we seem to have done that a lot lately so I have lots to use up.
ReplyDeleteLove the new header. Happy Spring!
That IS really simple. I'll have to try it for sure!
ReplyDeleteAt first I thought it was pie, but I must say, a 3 second cookie/cake thing, I like it that too!
ReplyDeleteAll of those cables are amazing.
I love that your son picks dandelions for you. So sweet!
ReplyDeleteRuby looks awesome. The others look great as well.
I may need to make that cake tonight. Can you subsitute with apples? I really don't feel like stopping at the store after work...

Wow - What a great post Leslie!
ReplyDeleteI love your new header and the story to go with it warms a mother's heart.
It reassures me to no end that even a knitting-magician like you occasionally gets flummoxed. It gives us beginners hope (hee he Ruby is looking stunning though (oh those cables!) and I can't wait for the big reveal when it's done.
Thank you SO much for sharing that delicious looking recipe. The perfect solution for last minute company and lately there have been more strawberries in the fridge than I know what to do with.
I love all your headers, and this one is very pretty, Very Spring!
ReplyDeleteOk, you totally lost me on the ruby instructions talk which is exactly why I have not seemed to preogress as a knitter. :)
I can't wait to see the completed sweater either!
Yummy cake, too!
Your knit is looking wonderful...I really do love that green. Hope the number of balls works out for you.
ReplyDeleteYum!! I'm going to add some rhubarb and give that one a shot. The sweater is looking fabulous!
ReplyDeleteOh boy! I did NOT know about picnik and it looks like a lot of fun! I can not wait to start playing!
ReplyDeleteThe recipe looks amazing! Can't wait to try it since I have a bunch of strawberries needing to be used.
And obviously your knitting is amazing.
Ruby's looking good!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for more pics!
Thanks for the recipe too,
I made the slice and bake ones that you posted about 2 months ago, the ones with corn flakes in them, and they lasted about a month! thanks for all the recipes.
Ok I'm making that breakfast cake tomorrow, and thanks for the Piknik link, I had never heard of it. I love your new springtime header!
ReplyDeleteeverything on the blog today is lovely: the header, the knitting, the baking...
ReplyDeletei love that you researched the hell out of the yarn over. sometimes i feel like an inexperienced knitter when i have to dig through every resource to find an answer to something like that.
i hope that ruby comes together for you without the need of any extra yarn. there must be something in the air lately, as everyone's running out of yarn towards the wrap-up of projects.
All those cables are beautiful to behold. Mmmm... cabley and green. Very spring! And dandelions to boot! Yay!
ReplyDeleteand then do you flip it over so that the crust is on top? it looks so good. i might make it for dessert on friday.
ReplyDeleteruby looks fantastic. i want her.
and the header. love. and love that they're charlie's wildflowers.
ooh! ruby is looking great - as is your header. now i have picnik to play with. thanks!
ReplyDeleteFresh headers are inspirational, don't you think? I used Picnik for mine too (since I was out of town and only had access to web apps).
ReplyDeleteYour header is lovely and now, even though the little dandies closed back up, you'll have a memorial of your little guy's happy face.
The dandilion bouquet is darling! Thank you for the Picnik tip - I didn't know that one:) And the Ruby will be fabulous - can't wait! I have to make this cookie/ cake - I like the idea of some rhubarb in there...yum-o!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Looks like a lot of work them cables! ;) And I knew nothing about Picnik and totally wish I hadn't now. Totally addictive!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see your ruby completed. and thanks for the recipe. I'll have to try it with blueberries. (I have quite a stash in the freezer.)
ReplyDeleteand since you take such gorgeous photos, I think that new headers are the way to go. so fun.
Leslie, you leave me speechless. I love how you make the knitting, the baking, the parenting, the photography look so second-nature and effortless.
ReplyDeleteI know you work hard to make it all happen but you *so* make it work!
What a sweet bouquet. And do I see grape hyacinth (I know I butchered that spelling, lol) in there? I happen to be the proud owner of a lovely vaseful of those myself, along with our first few dandelions of the year...
ReplyDeleteWho can resist a child bearing flowers? Ds2 gave the lady at the cutting counter at Joann's a dandelion yesterday...so sweet!
ohhhh that recipe sounds great! I recieved my little package btw! loved it all-thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteI love your changing headers! Your cables are beautiful and that looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the photo link thing. I like to change my header often and wanted to make my own. Ruby will be great, the cables are fab.
ReplyDeleteI ran out of wool when I was knitting a little jacket for my nephew. The shop didn't have the dye lot and at the time, it was the only store importing Debbie Bliss yarns to Australia. So, in a panic, I sent out an email to all of my overseas friends (most non-knitters). Within half an hour I got an email back from my friend Kristina in Halifax, Canada, to say that the wool shop across the road had it and would I like one ball or two! Lucky hey? So, the jacket is an international one now!Isn't it lovely to have friends all over th world?
ReplyDeletenow I should have checked the blog first and then I would know it was strawberry, not rhubarb...thanks for sharing...
ReplyDeleteThe new header is gorgeous- perfect for spring! Thanks for the recipe!
ReplyDeletethanks for the recipe! and your breakfast is making my jealous as i am eating my own breakfast of cereal right now!
ReplyDeleteAS far as I know 'yarn round needle' is the same as yarn over! Strange that you are told to do that but don't need holes?
ReplyDeleteHope it all comes out right in the end for you. Can't wait to see it finished :)
Ohh...I have been trying to figure out how people make such pretty headers. Thanks for the "heads up" har har. I can see how it can get addictive. I went and played with mine already :)
ReplyDeleteLove your new header... and that recipe looks delicious!
ReplyDeletePretty (the header)
ReplyDeleteExciting (your Ruby)
Yummy (the recipe)
Aw, man! I was sure I wasn't going to fall for this Ruby thing. Not gonna be my problem, I was positive. Now, though, darn it, I think you hooked me. Hm... I need to grow a spine. In the meantime, I think I'll copy down this recipe, too...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recipe! We have a cherry tree that produces more than I can eat or freeze and I'm always looking for new, simple recipes. Can't wait to give it a try!
ReplyDelete( those cables are looking quite delish too! )
jack and i say YUM about that cake!
ReplyDeletemy sons used to pick me dandelions. Back when we lived where dandelions grow! they are teenagers now, and have better things to do.

Yummo recipe and what a cute little heart strawberry! I. Can. Not. Wait. To. See. Your. Ruby!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI made you recipe last night and my husband loved it. He is a real strawberry shortcake fanatic. Thanks for sharing the recipe.
ReplyDeleteYUUUUM!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love the header, too!
an update - totally fab with the addition of rhubarb. I decreased the amount of sugar in the batter because I added sugar to the fruit. We're going to use this recipe all spring and summer long for peaches and apples and pears and plums and blueberries and huckleberries and....
ReplyDeleteI am keeping everything crossed that you will not run out of yarn, I think slimming the sleeves should work well.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, the header is so lovely and perfectly in tune with the season, such a sweet son, I love when my two bring me flowers. Now I am off to add strawberries to my shopping list....
Oh I cannot wait to see Ruby done! Going to let Lily bake the strawberry cake when she gets home too. Thanks for the recipe!
ReplyDeletelove the new header - perfect for spring! that pie/cookie thing looks amazing! I bet it'd be great with almost any fruit!
ReplyDeleteLove the dandelions...my daughter just came home from school with a handful for me!
ReplyDeleteRuby looks awesome, I'm trying to decide who I love enough to make her for!
And thanks for the link to picnik, I'm probably the last person on Earth to NOT know what it is!
Marissa
Love the header and the cake... Kim is urging me to make one!
ReplyDeleteI love your new header. I really need to do something with mine someday especially since I am a photography nut!
ReplyDeleteAnd, I really like your progress shot ---- cables are my first love.
Found your strawberry cake recipe through Sarah's blog (spjacksonphoto.typepad.com) and made one today. So delicious! In my oven it only took 35 minutes. I love it's simplicity and flavor. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI *love* the new banner, because it reminds me of my girl's frequent gifts of dandelions to me. xoxox
ReplyDeleteI think that's a recipe that even I could try at a moment's notice...!

I am still loving your strawberry cake recipe this year. We've made 4 in the past week (but i use 1/2 cup whole wheat flour, 1/2 cup unbleached). Thanks so much!
