acorns
Tuesday, October 23, 2007After seeing Kim's and Tracy's adorable acorns, I knew that we had to make some. Of course, I didn't want to buy the felted balls. I decided we should make them, so I put my kids to work. Last week after school one day I had them roll the wool into balls. Easy enough. Then as Martha suggested, we dipped them into warm, soapy water. The directions then tell you to pass them back in forth in your hands for about 10 minutes. The kids lasted about 2 minutes. I lasted about 3 minutes. I am sure there is an easier way to do this. However, I couldn't figure it out. Maybe Sabrina knows since she made a bunch for her beautiful bobble bag.
Next time, I think I would buy the balls. I think ours just look like balls of yarn with acorn tops. But, I guess there is nothing wrong with that.

AW..yours are cute & they have charcter. I think they are adorable!
ReplyDeleteNuh-uh! Yours are way more rustic and authentic. I think they are just adorable. And I give you an 'A' for effort on ball rolling. I would have lasted 30 seconds and then given up. I didn't even think of Sabrina's Boblicious Bag, but I'm sure that would have worked too. And you have an acorn dish! Too cute.
ReplyDeleteThey're adorable!
ReplyDeleteWhat about needle felting? I've never done it but those acorns look like the kinda thing you could make with it.
ReplyDeleteIf those little pals were in my house I would have an uncontrollable urge to draw faces on them with a Sharpie!
ReplyDeleteo.m.g!! too freakin' cute!
ReplyDeleteHi Leslie!
ReplyDeleteThe bobble bag's bobbles are knit (cast on one, knit 5, 6, or 7 stiches into that one (depending on desired size), then knit for 5, 6, or 7 rows, BO, then with tail and tapestry needle, run yarn through the edges, pull to pucker into a ball, and then into the washing machine they go).
I think you could probably do a little I-cord number and with a running stitch pucker it into a ball, hit the washing machine, etc...
The other thing I would do is needle felt them!
xoxoxo,
Sabrina
OMG! Could those BE any cuter?
ReplyDeletei have made those balls with warm soapy water and roving....they take WAY longer than 3 minutes! Your acorns are pretty dang cute, though. Love them!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, these are darling! I HAVE to make some. DH was walking by and I showed him the picture; he didn't get it. Ah, men! They are awesome - thanks for the inspiration. Now when do I have time to make them...........
ReplyDeleteAnd YES what a way to display them - so cool!
ReplyDeleteTanya
I think those yours are better! Much more organic and super cute!!
ReplyDeleteThey are really sweet. I agree that 10 minutes is too long.
ReplyDeleteI think they're totally cute!
ReplyDeleteThose are so cute! I like the look of yours also. Plus, it is a nice, fun thing to do with the kids and I am sure they love it (even if only for two minutes)! My kids would have fun with that - if only I could find acorns around my house. We just have a bunch of pine needles.
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful piece of art made with love:)
ReplyDeleteThese can be kept as little treasures throughout the years!
I love them!
ReplyDeleteno.
ReplyDeletethey look like adorable balls of yarn with acorn tops.
i love them!
They are great little acorns! I loved your previous post too.
ReplyDeleteOMG - what a great idea! Those look great! love the colors. Fun that you did it with your kids too :)
ReplyDeleteThese are so sweet. I think I am coming around to the idea of felting. It has never really appealed but those acorns and that bag are fantastic.
ReplyDeleteI think they came out really adorable the way you made them!! Wouldn't change a thing.
ReplyDeleteThose acorns look so pretty, a great fall project! I think I would have lasted about 3 minutes with rolling the balls as well.
ReplyDeleteLove them!
ReplyDeleteThey are so sweet.
I wonder if you try wearing 'exfoliating gloves' after you've dipped in the warm water when rolling? Just a thought. :)
ReplyDeleteBTW - I failed to mention.. they came out BEAUTIFUL!!!!
ReplyDeleteluv em, great photo!
ReplyDeleteLes, you sure do get an A for effort. They look pretty cute to me but if you don't like them.... everything you do can't be perfect...it just doesn't work that way. Welcome to my world! I'm sure those little buggers will still look cute accenting a fall arrangement. You'll think of something...you always do. ciao!
ReplyDeleteThese acorns are darling! I actually like the non-perfectness of them :)
ReplyDeletethose are so cute! I have seen people roll them on bubble paper or something with texture to make them felt better...
ReplyDeleteCUTE!!! They have so much colour to lighten up autumn days!!
ReplyDeleteNo, no! I love how yours have the rustic look! I'm totally going to copy you. I just hope my cats don't think they are kitty toys. :)
ReplyDeleteAdorable and how funny you & your kids created them together!
ReplyDeleteMy girls have put a bunch of acorn tops in a bowl, which are sweet in their own right. My youngest has wild ideas for them...maybe I'll steer her towards the felted or knitted acorns!
Couldn't you stick them in a sock and felt them in the washing machine?
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness, i just want to eat them up! they are adorable.
ReplyDeleteI so want some! Not that my home needs added whimzy at the moment. I love your new layout!
ReplyDeleteAbsolument adorable !
ReplyDeleteI think they're pretty cute! (And all of the other FOs I missed while I was away are fab, to!)
ReplyDelete10 minutes?! Not a chance! I think they look great the way they are -- the "texture" is fun!
ReplyDeleteNope- absolutely nothing wrong with those acorns! And let me just say, if all acorns looked as good, I wouldn't mind almost tripping on them every time I go for a run! :)
ReplyDeleteThey are still lovely! I totally agree with buying the balls--I had grand ideas of making a tree garland last christmas. Umm, I think I made about 5 balls. There has got to be a better way to make them, but I don't know what it is.
ReplyDeletethey look pretty cute to me! i would last about 2 minutes with the hand felting too.
ReplyDeleteMy gosh, these acorns are just the cutest! I guess I haven't seen something as adorable for long! Love them!!!
ReplyDeletei love these, so perfectly fun for fall!
ReplyDeleteI think your acorns look great!! I can't remember the last time I saw an acorn top!!
ReplyDeleteI think they're adorable! Little yarnicorns. :D
ReplyDeleteThose are absolutely adorable. I can't stand it. Where does the cuteness end???
ReplyDeletei have no idea how to knit, but I could look at your blog all day..wonderful.
ReplyDeleteIf you ever want to make them again, try putting dish soap directly on the wool before dunking them. It makes the felting go much, much faster than just warm soapy water!
