taking me back
Friday, August 24, 2007Did you happen to see the Vogue Knitting 25th Anniversary issues Top 10 Hits? I gave a little chuckle when I saw this one. Yes, it was 1991. When I pulled this out of the BOX (I don't wear it), it took me back in time. I was living in San Francisco, single and carefree. Most of this was knit in my apartment, sitting on the floor, watching movies. My roommate sat next to me, knitting too. I can't remember what she was working on. What I do remember, was the taste of her homemade salsa. It was so hot it would make our noses run. She gave me the recipe, but I can never duplicate it. The stitches in here are like little minutes of time.

I remember you posting about these sweaters before. And when I picked up VK 25th I totally thought of you when I saw the globe sweater!! At least you can pull it off. And I mean both the look and the sweater itself! ;-)
ReplyDeleteStill, it's a great testament to your mad knitting skills...
That is so funny! You were wuite patient to knit those 2 sweaters, do you remember what kind of yarn you used?
ReplyDeleteThose are AWESOME! I am sitting here with my mouth agape in awe.
ReplyDeleteWOW!
ReplyDeleteLots of work knitting those ;)
Have a great weekend!
You know what? I would totally have worn those back in 1991!
ReplyDeleteI think they're great and don't ever part with them! :-)
I had a similar experience in looking through that issue. I found that DKNY Tree sweater that I made twice(!). It was HUGE, but back then, big sweaters with narrow pants were very 'in.' I'm convinced if I keep it long enough, it may come back.
ReplyDeleteWow. Thats pretty impressive- and what gets me even more than the skill you have, is how you can work a sweater circa 1991 and make it look awesome-still. ;)
ReplyDeleteThose are FABULOUS! You HAVE to keep them.. b/c they will come back. The great circle of sweater life! :)
ReplyDeleteYou're still rockin' those sweaters, Lady! I did a double-take to make sure they weren't model pictures from the magazine. Wow. That is all.
ReplyDeleteGreat post and fabulous sweaters...so colorful, I LOVE them! You make them look so stylish. Be sure to save them for Libby.
ReplyDeleteWow! Thank you for sharing your interplanetary knits. What will we say about the things we are knitting now in ten years?
ReplyDeleteawesome! I really like the universe one. You could wear it for Halloween. They are great looking sweaters, even if they are a little 90s.
ReplyDeleteThose sweaters look great - maybe a "bit" dated for now - but you did a fantastic job! Kudos to you for working through those projects.
ReplyDeleteWOW! that is some really impressive knitting I must say!
ReplyDeleteWow. Those are cracking me up! But remember, we're laughing WITH you, not AT you :) I have a few sweaters that my grand-mother knitted for me that have the same effect...
ReplyDeleteLOL They're both outta this world :) Funny the things you remember about that objects you knit. Time, place, people, things. They're all knitted into the stitches.
ReplyDeleteSo yeah, you kinda rock!
ReplyDeleteWow, how very '80's of you! You could probably teach off of them, they are so accurate. They are diffenately keepsakes.
ReplyDeleteWOW!! At first, I thought the photos were from a magazine...
ReplyDeleteTotally sexy Leslie!
ReplyDeleteI think we should bring it back into fashion. (NOT!)
ReplyDeleteI chuckled too! They both have great memories. Be sure to preserve them for long while!
ReplyDeleteThose sweaters scream a specific decade - don't they? They look great though. I really want more information on your new knitting journal - do you have any? g
ReplyDeleteI freakin' LOVE those sweaters! They remind me of those Coca Cola rugby shirts that everyone wore (or at least everyone in College Station, Texas wore). Which reminds me of Swatch watches...I could go on and on.....
ReplyDeleteBut your sweaters are awesome and the knitting is wonderful!!!! Thanks for showing them!
OK, those are pretty fugly lookin (no offense, of course) but it's saying something that you made it through the 80s as a knitter - that's a lot of intarsia!! You're probably a better knitter because of it!
ReplyDeleteWow... I love the sweaters, and I love the fact that you kept them all these years!
ReplyDeleteYou are basically my new hero.
ReplyDeletethanks for the laugh!
ReplyDeleteTo this day, I still love those sweaters. YOU wear them WAY better now than you did in the 90's. :)Here's to you!!!!!
ReplyDeleteOh but they look fab, I love the colors in the first sweater more than the one on the model.
ReplyDeleteI knit a sweater once with tons of teddy bears on it, one of these days I'll go through all my old photos and find a pic of it. Took me about 2 years and by the time I finished it,it was a bit small, I only wore it once to show it off!!!
It's a treasure indeed!
ReplyDeleteI love it! Those should be on display somewhere - they look to be very well done!
ReplyDeleteTHAT'S AWESOME! and so sweet that you've kept your handmade sweaters for SIXTEEN YEARS! hee hee

ReplyDeleteOMG! Are you serious? That is some knitting, my friend. I commend you for making those, keeping them, and proudly wearing them for this post.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that look will come back someday. Fabulous job.
OMG, WOW!
ReplyDeleteYou rocked the world AND the univers!
(those were a lot of work!)
yay! I'll agree with others that it's so great that you saved them and modelled them for us. It makes me remember what I was wearing in the late 80's early 90's. Oh, and impressive knitting too by the way
ReplyDeleteThat Vogue Knitting inspired me to make a little 1980s knitting fashion show on my blog, too! I guess great minds thing alike. Yours are awesome--much better than my mohair madness.
ReplyDeleteNo. way. That's great. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm seriously SPEECHLESS!
ReplyDeleteWoah! WOAH!!!! My gosh, these sweaters are totally and absolutely awesome! I can only begin to imagine what a lot of work this must have been - the knitting itself, and then the weaving in of the ends! I'm impressed, absolutely!
ReplyDeleteAAHAHAHAAA!
ReplyDeleteThose are AWESOME. I love that universe one... my husband's into space stuff, I should knit him one of those! :D
Hang on to them... they'll be back in style in another few years or so...
Sweet! Those remind me of my punky-brewsteresque multicolored hi-top converse that I got for Christmas one year. Awesome.
ReplyDeleteNo, not back in the box! Lovely post Leslie, do you have any other particularly special memories or sweaters to share, I am sure we would all love to see them!
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with everyone. These sweaters are really impressive! No, definitely not for wearing in 2007 but still real treasures.
ReplyDeleteLMAO... thats awesome....
ReplyDeleteluv Abby
The universe sweater is awesome. I love it. You should wear that now.
ReplyDeleteI love these sweaters. How funny! Actually, there's a Map of the World Afghan that I really really wanted to make, but I suck at intarsia. I originally wanted to make it for my in-laws.
